Oh Lordy. I’m sure both of his goals that season were tremendous. We missed a trick there. How’s champion’s league winner Djimi Traore doing?

Think he's retired mate, but he won more silverware over in Seatle. Legend.

We're selling Gomez or Matip if de Ligt is signed. There's no other realistic outcome, which is why we won't sign him as Gomez has signed a new deal and Matip is supposed to follow.

We may currently rotate Matip and Gomez but if they're both firmly behind de Ligt and van Dijk there's no reason for them to stay here.

It's a rumour that makes no sense.

Why not Lovren? Probably the highest earner and now probably last in the pecking order.

You'd have thought that this squad is still missing the Fekir player.

We wanted him last summer, we didn't get him & decided to stick with what we had.  But Klopp identified Fekir as to someone who could either improve our depth, starting line up or give the side something we lacked.

Isco definitely has a lot of those attributes with his dribbling, retention of the ball, vision - all things Fekir offers.  I'm just not convinced he offers the goals threat we would have wanted in Fekir.  As I think one of the reasons we wanted Fekir was to have an alternative to Firmino, so we wouldn't have to use a Wijnaldum type option vs Barca away for example.

Bruno Fernandes is the player who really might be more suited as he's scored a ridiculous amount of goals this season, as well as getting assists.  I think getting a Firmino alternative is incredibly tough as that player has to be very good in a number of areas offering goals, assists, vision, work rate, tactically astute, ability to hold up the ball, be press resistant etc.

I don't know who that player is - the player might be Mane and then it might be easier to get another wide player.  So when Firmino can't play Sadio goes central.  Not sure, but I think the attacking player who comes will want to offer a lot of the attributes Fekir did as there was a reason why we wanted him.

Isn’t this player Griezmann? He can play 9/10, scores goals, has assists, works hard....

Even if we sell Lovren, buying de Ligt would relegate one of Gomez or Matip to 4th choice and it's not realistic they would accept this or that we would want to do that given what both of them have shown.

I don't see what's so unrealistic about it.

We are Champion's League winners and will be competing for league and CL trophies over the next few seasons, I think we can all agree? Teams at that level need depth. Not depth where you have a really good starter, an aging veteran who used to be good backing them up, and then a kid in reserve. No, serious, world-class depth, the kind where we can look at Barca's or City's squad and say "yeah, we can match or beat that all the way down."

Signing De Ligt would instantly give us the best defense in world football, hands down. It would mean that, rather than panicking if van Dijk were to go down with some sort of injury (which would certainly have ended any chances we had at a trophy last season), we'd grimace but be OK knowing that we'd go into the games during his absence with two of the best young CBs in the game (Gomez and De Ligt) starting and a capable, experienced backup available in Matip.

I think there's a perfectly good argument to be made that a major upgrade at AM would be a better bang-for-our-buck signing, in that 60m there might get you an extra 3-4 points/season where De Ligt maybe doesn't make that impact in the short term, but the idea that we wouldn't buy De Ligt because Matip wouldn't accept 4th choice is nonsense.

Matip is not some world-class CB who was heralded across the continent when we got him and would have dozens of offers for a starting berth at a top club if he left. He was a free from Schalke. If he left his career would go the same way Sakho's has, and he knows it. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to stay and earn trophies over the next 3 years of his career while playing 1000 minutes a season. And if he's not, well, it's not like he'd be impossible to replace.

I'm not commenting on whether we should do it. I don't know, frankly. I think what de Ligt has shown at his age is remarkable and 70m or so is not a bad investment, but is he that good? It's hard to say, Imo because he's only 19. He's still got lots to learn at a position that is not easy for a young player.

What I'm saying is that, from what I believe to know about Klopp, he would not relegate Gomez or Matip to the bench after what they've shown. I just don't think we'll buy him. We're meant to offer Matip a new contract, does it really sound to you that CB is a priority?

I'll get crucified for saying this, but Phil ticks all our boxes in terms of what we need.

Play in the front 3 if needed.

Play in advanced midfield.

Play in midfield.

Free-kick specialist.

what about his back problems

I don't see what more is possible for a 19 year old. He's captain of Ajax, Dutch Player of the Year, got voted in the Champions League Team of the Season and he plays regularly for the Dutch National team.

Yeah, but if we refuse to deal with every questionable figure behind the footballing curtain we'll find that success disappears behind it.

Yeah I know

How long ago was I talking about Albrighton? That was probably before I was fully enlightened by data...

Seems I mentioned him as a potential signing once, in April 2012, on a thread called Leftfield Moneyball Transfer Signings. 'Kinell...

I'm sure you can find a better example of a bad transfer suggestion from me than a leftfield option who went on to win the league in a better team than we had at that time NV!
