Don't know what happened to him as soon as he signed for us. I was genuinely excited when we bought him having watched most of the Europa League run he was on the season before. Part of the reason why Benfica lost to Sevilla was because he was banned having been sent off in the semi final.

When he came here he got played out of position but even if he was he still would have shown something to demonstrate why we paid 20m for him. He just did absolutely nothing. Maybe it was the realisation that he was getting paid shitloads for doing very little but then 4 clubs basically a level below us have all taken the decision to wash their hands of him. Don't think there's ever been a footballer who has dropped so low in such a short time. He's basically gone from one of Europe's most promising and exciting players to the fella you wonder how he's managed to blag everyone that he is a professional footballer.

I heard he got one of his mates to pretend he was George Weah and he rang up Rodgers saying Markovic was his cousin and that he should sign him immediately, and Rodgers being a bit gullible rushed to slap the money on the table without watching him play first.

I used to call him Euro Downing but, to be fair, that was beyond generous. He represents maybe the worst phenomenon of modern football: the player who can make an exceptional living to the point where he need never work again, despite being so shit and lazy he almost never plays.
