You'd have to be thick to not acknowledge that a failure to diversify from a largely oil based economy has played a big role in Venezuela's current fate.

Thick. Or a troll.

That's the CIA that is. They kept the country dependent on oil so they could go in and raid it later on.

The place has been fucked since Papprlon got citizenship. What a guy.

He's a CIA agent he is.

The CIA are so obsessed with Venezuela that even if they install a leader perfect for them they'll stage another coup to get rid later on, just because they're so used to staging coups there and have started enjoying it. They're addicted to the place.

I've gone and fucked it now. Said CIA 3 times in one post, so all my 21k+ posts here will have been downloaded and stored at the Utah Data Center ready to be checked. I feel really sorry for any twat that might wade through them all, would be good karma for taking them in the first place though.

Maduro has been a nightmare, obviously, but to just point at socialism and scream REEEEEE isn’t particularly nuanced. The same way that pointing to capitalism and screaming REEEEE at it for being the sole reason tens of millions of Americans are without health care cover, tens more millions on the verge of bankruptcy, wealth inequality being outrageous, debt levels being mental, the global economic collapse, etc. is lacking nuance. Both positions are ignorant and ideologically driven.

Actually the moral thing to do would be to oppose the dogmatic ideology that has led directly to this catastrophe, and dozens like it.

Capitalism?  US imperialism?

I don't believe you're stupid, so I don't believe you genuinely think that Socialism leads inevitably to violence and chaos or that there has ever been a genuinely Socialist regime that wasn’t subject to the worst pressures from foreign powers (i.e. the US and its allies) for its entire existence.

Be careful, man. You can’t just go around the internet talking smack about America like that. This is a different time we’re living in.

Correctomundo. The lizard people are the only rational explanation.

The horrible things foreign powers made Stalin do.

Not to mention to a lesser degree Lenin and Trotsky before him, all selfish agendist powerbrokers the lot. Trotsky being a Jew in particular fucking those other two off.

Marx, their inspiration, would have been proud.

But yes, someone else made them do it.

Don’t agree with all of this but it presents a comprehensive and nuanced view that I think could be helpful for some people

It's a good article, not that much different from the usual coverage Venezuela gets in publications like the Economist or as it was presented in, for example, recent BBC documentary on Chavez.

What I don't understand it is even in the face of overwhelming evidence that economic policies of Chavez-Maduro regime(s) were misguided and in some elements suicidal, so many people would still go to extreme lengths to persuade you it was not so and the problems weren't largely self-inflicted.

I don’t know why other people do things but it’s quite clear the crisis has stemmed from a combination of factors including but not limited to certain economic policies, outside subversion, sustained drop in oil prices, rampant corruption, staggering inequality, economic sanctions etc. etc. So squarely blaming the economic policies of the current and previous regimes just doesn’t cut the mustard.

Why did he kill millions of people, then?

Because he was a cunt, perhaps... like all the "capitalist" and "socialist" murderers before and since?

I heard somewhere it was because he was an atheist or because he had a moustache, can't remember which.

It kind of does, because most of the things you listed can be classified under economic policies. Faced with various problems over the past 20-odd years, the government typically decided on the wrong choice of action in the given circumstances.
