He's helped turn the tide in plenty of games really, but I'm not too bothered about it because I think his foot condition probably robbed him of his best chance to grow into the player he could have been.  Looking forward to seeing how he does with Fabinho in the side, early signs are they actually complement each other quite well.

There’s also absolutely no way he could ever be considered overrated by our fans, most seem to think he’s some kind of cross between Huddlestone and Cattermole when he’s actually a quality player.

When Dicks and Diouf 1st came The we’re rated very highly. Dicks as one of the best  Lbs in the Prem and Diouf was supposed to be a very exciting talent at the time. And both were extremely shite, therefore they overrated when they arrived.

Good thread - and a tricky one, because it feels like a lot of players are variously under-rated by fans with expectations so high regardless of context (even when we didnt have a penny to rub together in the H&G dying days). An underrated thread would be interesting.

 

GK - Kirkland (outside of the club, probably David James - 53 international caps does not speak to how destabilising he could be)

RB - Martin Kelly (a lot had high hopes that he never really merited - has not pushed on in a Palace side that was v poor the last few years)

CB - Skrtel (truly horrendous for a number of seasons - how bad he became probably didnt get the recognition deserved)

CB - Rigobert Song / Carragher (the former one from the conveyor belt of weird 90s signings .. the latter was superb in the mid-to-late 2000s but part of the reason we were so mediocre in the first and the final few years of his career)

LB - Staunton, maybe? Feels like the left back defiencies were well acknowledged for 2 decades before Roberton's arrival (although peak-Riise is a candidate for under-rated)

MF-  Jay Spearing (55 appearances at the club for a player who - leaving at the age of 25 - has not even played in the Premier League during the 5 years since and was in League One before the age of 30. A lot of red-tinted specs when he broke through)

MF - Redknapp (11 years at the club for a journeyman's-journeyman)

LM - Berger (Classy player .. but spent 7 years at the club on the back on 1 or 2 decent seasons)

RM - McManaman (Didn't really score .. left the club in a hugely shoddy way ..)

FWD - Morientes - (1-in-5 goal record for a player so much was expected of ..  never looked like taking off here but got 40+ appearances out of the club)

FWD - Litmanen (Smacks of the Falcao-esque signings pursued by United in recent years .. a bonafide legendary player bought in after his team, who despite a few touches of magic over here was made of glass and a man after his time)

Correct. He is so bad he's now pulling the wool over the eyes of one the world's best managers on almost a weekly basis. He's even been so bad he's helped a team stay unbeaten and top the league through half a season!
