The weird thing is, Maguire was vaguely alright when they were a compact counterattacking team. He's an old school, limited, sit on the edge of the box and head anything and anyone away sort of player. A poor man's Nat Phillips and probably worth a third of his fee.

 

Trying to get him to be a modern CB who plays progressively in space was suicidal.

Weirdly enough, City seemed genuinely interested at some point but wouldn't pay. He would have made absolutely no sense for them. 

 

Similarly, they seemed interested in Ronaldo and Alexis Sanchez. Almost like they've tricked United into overpaying for all three. Maguire massively on the fee and Sanchez and Ronaldo on crazy wages.

John Terry was similar imo. As soon as Chelsea's backline moved 10 yards further upfield he started to become exposed.   Its far, far easier defending deep.  Dare I say it but likes of Carra, Hyypia & Henchoz also benefitted from this.  Not to say these aren't bad defenders (they were bloody brilliant at what they did) but they needed to fit a certain system.  Players like VVD are generational talents that can truly cope with playing a high line and making it look easy

Of course they've put out a statement after an emergency board meeting that no decision has been made on his future. As part of the club is listed on the NYSE, they are obliged to announce significant business decisions to the exchange (and thus their shareholders) first so they can't offer a committal one way or the other before then.
