Poverty Porn

Yeah got a dude on my Facebook I knew vaguely from work, always begging in DMs for likes on his business page updates.

Once he took a homeless bloke to breakfast and put about 25 pictures on Facebook, every comment gushing about his amazing kind act. 3 weeks later he was using street slang to praise the latest Tory budget.

I wasn't aware of any of this stuff until I read this thread, taking selfies with homeless people is low, but ruining the good name of porn?

These people should be lined up & shot.

Harsh on the homeless that. They've already got the shitty end of the stick as it is.

People doing good things for the wrong reason is better than doing nothing for the right reason.

Not sure that sentence makes any sense, but it sounds like it might.

I once tried to impress a girl by giving a homeless man some change, but as I approached him I reached into my pocket and realised I only had 7p left on me. I'd already made eye contact, deviated course towards him and begun the pocket rummage though, so I was committed and had to go through with it; I chucked the change, hoping it'd be lost in his hat amongst a few other coins, but sadly he had nothing else in it. I walked away briskly as he shouted "Wow, a whole seven pence!" in a sarcastic tone.

In totally unrelated news, I decided the girl was a biffa and I wasn't really interested anyway.

I work as a bus driver and see lots of homelessness, you get to know the regulars. Some are homeless by choice- Shopping Cart Jesus is an El Salvadoran lad who has all his stuff in a trolley and has signs draped over it praising Jesus; he choses to live a life of poverty.

The bus shelters serve as sleeping quarters for many. There's a van that goes round when its -30C out checking on them and handing out sleeping bags. Many are afraid of the shelters because they suffer abuse there from other homeless people, or are high or drunk and there's only one shelter that will take them The Salvation Army comes with a dose of the Bible apparently. I worked nights one winter and sometimes you'd get people riding for two-theee hours for warmth.

There's alot of solvent abuse and mouthwash abuse and hand sanitizer abuse. One of the downtown runs is nicknamed the Paint Thinner Express.

So many ignorant people look down on those suffering and think they are the authors of their own misfortunes. I reckon its easier on them to think that than actually thinking about what can be done.

One story I always liked was a driver gave a muffin to a street panhandler who stands on a median in a intersection. The guy opened te bag and looked inside snd then tossed it away. Some of the other drivers listening were saying how rude, see they just want money for drugs, etc, ectc...get a job, clean yourself up. Someone commented that maybe he doesn't like blueberry muffins.

Next day he gave him a choclate chip muffin and the panhandler was grateful and smiled and ate it.

The sooner people realize that charity is a band aid and that the real solution is proper access to social services and health services you could actually save the taxpayers money.

I should point out that her Labour council is pretty infamous for slashing funding to things like SEN provision and blaming the Tories while retaining the free bar at the Mayors' Christmas do.

Something else I fucking hate is slacktivism. There's about a dozen websites that allow you to auto generate an email to your MP now (I think one of them is actually called 'do gooder') on any subject from Brexit to salmon fishing in the Yemen. The MP auto generates a letter on your behalf to a minister, who auto generates one back to the MP who then auto generates one back to you. Then all is well in the world. Or not, as the case may be.

It's just all nibbling around the edges of real problems to make ourselves feel better while no actual change or prospect of change is achieved.

Hand jobs for the homeless on the Arts council's nipple is not going to bring about any real change, except to make your own Instagram page look quirky.

Agreed. Do something to really help society. Beat a Tory to death, then do the same to the narcissistic wankers posting pictures of themselves feeding homeless people like fucking ducks.

Was out with a girl I was chasing, approached by a panhandler, all I had was a $20, so I declined.

Ultimately, her level of charity matched mine.

Nah that's boss, if you'd painted his nails and then asked the lottery for money however I might have had an issue with it.

There's a few questions that come from this:

  • Do people understand the nature of homelessness (e.g. why some choose to stay on the streets rather than taking up accommodation and the consequences if they do take up accommodation)?
  • Do people know how to actually help? Does buying a coffee and a chat help?
  • Are local services enough for those who are actually homeless? Where's the conversation about the gaps/black holes?
  • Is the social media element just a message for self-esteem/confidence? Is it that these people just don't actually know how to help? Or is it solely for popularity and gratification?
  • Are we doing enough to support people who are likely to be susceptible to drug addiction, mental health problems and restrictions to accessing services?

No

No

No

We're evolved to live in small tribes where each member would die for one another. That's the kind of love and commitment it takes for people to be able to motivate themselves out of addictions and other hopeless scenarios. Everything else is just a bandaid solution.
