Your mistake was trying to apply any sort of logic to it. Watched under the influence of a small amount of hallucinogens everything becomes clear and obvious.

The magnets are in the crossbar and there is a metal piece in the ball. The magnet gets switched on as the ball approaches the crossbar and switched off just before contact to ensure it bounces away. This also explains Pickford's strange behaviour - his metal watch meant his hands briefly stuck to the crossbar.
