He was - but Marcelo was too, and he’s clearly world class. Will not derail the thread further - but Brazilian footballers can be a very funny bunch — the likes of Adriano that have lurched from sublime to ridiculous overnight. Luiz has a nasty habit of generally being very good whenever he plays against us (both for Benfica and Chelsea). G. Neville loves sweeping statements aimed to delight the gallery .. the fact is that David Luiz has been a starring figure in League, Champions League & UEFA Cup winning 11s .. that doesn’t happen by accident ...

Schmeichel

Babbel Campbell Stam Cole

Gerrard Viera Scholes Ronaldo

Suarez Henry

Harsh on Terry, but I think Campbell's extra pace gave him the edge.

RB & CB is probably the hardest position to do.  CB - Terry, Hyypia, Ferdinand, Vidic, Adams etc etc. RB - well as we've seen in this discussion.  If they were all at their peak & playing now, I'd probably put Gerrard RB, then have Robben or Beckham or someone at RM instead.  But Gerrard won PFA player of the season playing RM, so that's good enough for me.  I nearly went Zabeleta at RB, but my LFC goggles gave it to Babbel.

Don't think I need to explain Viera, Scholes, Ronaldo, Suarez & Henry.  All elite.

Walker is very good. Had a transformative effect on City (see: impact of Ederson plus FBs on Guardiola 2nd season vs first). Very good at Spurs too. Probably most like the Ashley Cole of the right-side than any other English RBs. The type of completely athletic full back I hoped Clyne may turn into. Needs to produce for City over the next 3-4 seasons to be in this type of discussion though. More than one League title needed.

ps I see David Luiz is jokingly added above — he is one for the under rated section. When he is concentrated on his football (which, as with many Brazilians of his ilk, can be fleeting) he is a superb defender, mixing brawn with great ability on the ball. It’s no coincidence that Chelsea’s “on” seasons often coincide with a lengthy run for him in the team, and their decline seasons align with him out through various ‘maladies’.

That wasn't a joke. Those are an 11 of players that I mostly like but that most people, especially in the media viewed negatively. The only kind of bad players in there are Assou-Ekotto and Almunia. Even Anderson was alright even though he massively wasted his potential.

I think Luiz has shown he's a good defender. He's just a risk taker and plays the game differently than people are used to.

Honourable mentions to Scholes and Les Ferdinand who just missed out.

Hipster. Although Irwin is a great shout.

Scholes is laughably overrated and shouldn’t be anywhere near anyone’s 11.

Take your red tinted glasses off. He was quality. Successfully morphed from a goal scoring AM to a deep-lying Pirlo like midfielder, pulling the strings. But don’t take my word for it... Take Xavi’s!

“Paul Scholes is a role model. For me – and I really mean this – he's the best central midfielder I've seen in the last 15, 20 years.”

Schmeichel

Ivanovic Carvalho Terry Cole

Ronaldo Makelele Gerrard Bale

Suarez Henry

Bench: De Gea, Vidic, Azpilicueta, Kante, Lampard, Shearer, Aguero

8 Chelsea players in that squad. I knew you were weird
