Spacing after commas and full stops.

Go pulled up today about my e-mailing style. Fair enough I am quite informal so I’ll up my game there but this woman was on about spacing after a comma and full stop. I had no idea what she was on about. Something about double space after a full stop.

Still have real idea WTF this was about. In all my years working I’ve never heard anything about this shit.

Anyone know what the chuff this is?

I tend to go double after a full stop, but that's just me.   I  don't think it's something that there are any hard rules about.

They used a larger spaces (en quads, en space, en dash, em quads) in the days of typewriters and differing type spaces. If I ever see it now, I dislike it; it's a bit cringeworthy and a bit distracting. It's out of place and was a standard dropped over half a century ago. Anybody saying you should use them now is a meff. It's not a rule, it's a stylistic choice and one that is badly out of date and needs fucking off.

The spacing one after a full stop is actually quite a lively debate in punctuation circles.

 

As NV noted above, it used to be standard to put two spaces back when typewriters were in vogue. Even when I went through school in the 90s it was still taught; I remember a teacher that was a stickler for two spaces.

 

Nowadays most typefaces look better with a single space and that's gradually taking over as the older generation dies out. I have tried my best to train myself to use a single space but I definitely still use double spaces from time to time.

Pick up any newspaper, they all use single spacing after a full stop. Newspaper style guides are as close to an industry standard for written material as you can get.

Today I just started every new sentence on a new line.

That’s what I’m asking him. If that’s how he likes to style it, fair enough. I hate it, but he can do what he likes. If he’s saying it’s a rule, then I disagree. It’s pretty much put to bed by most publication’s style guides.
