Some fuck ugly buildings going up at the moment too, the end of town by Costco and by the Uni looks like some giant toddler dropped its meccano all over the shop. Probably student digs owned by Chinese and/or Qatari investors that'll be empty in five years - let the good times roll.

As if the place couldn't get any worse.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-merseyside-53222988

"Councillors in Liverpool have approved plans for a £5m aerial zip wire, despite fears it could lead to the "Disneyfication" of the city centre .

Zip World's 400m (1,312ft) line will see an aerial wire run from St John's Beacon to Liverpool Central Library."

Was saying on the FF that Anderson has got some balls talking about the state of the Pier Head given that he's single handedly turned the place into Biff Tannonville.

@Strontium Dog let's get your boys back, you bring the open-toed sandles I'll bring the brown corduroy blazers and we'll roust some shitbags.

That's got to be up there with demolishing the original Cavern in terms of stupid fucking ideas.

the bohemian qualities, which set Liverpool apart from all the rest, have certainly been decimated by some right fucking helmets in the centre since i first lived there in the early 90's. my lad certainly knows no different, being born in the mid 2000's in the city

still better than most places though. no question at all. not that my patronage is required

I'm not so sure. I've ranted about this before but the city is a black hole for stuff like tech startups. You've got the baltic triangle but it's nothing compared to what's going on in Manchester.

You've got the BBC and Granada there plus also a thriving agency scene, advertising and shit.

I was on the verge of starting my own business before all this kicked off, I'd actually pulled the trigger but fortunately my boss offered me a new job about four days after everything kicked off properly.

I'd done a lot of research. There was nothing in terms of stuff like business advice or loans/grants, i found two links to schemes but one had closed in 2016 and the other took me to a porn site (not even joking). I was looking for premises and I googled the linkedin of one guy running a high prifile shared tech office space in town and his only previous employment was in a pub.

I eventually found some incubator space run by a bank, the woman in charge had been in the startup business for 30 years and basically said "yeah I wouldn't bother around here, they have the odd networking event with some of the usual suspects there for photos but they're pointless, I don't go any more."

There's loads you could do to encourage a startup culture or a tech vibe in a buzzing city like liverpool with four universities, the council just don't give a fuck. It's all low paid jobs in the service sector, chinese student villages (let's see how that turns out now long term) and apart hotels for pissheads from Gateshead.

Part of the problem I think is that when you're a labour city you can just blame everything on government cuts. There's some truth to that but it's not the whole story. We need to stop electing people purely because they 'out scouse' the competition.

As the kids in their late 30's say... 'word'.

On a brighter note, I'm coming up with my new fam for a mini break next week, so any recommendations on coolest bars (non scal) and best foodie places will be welcomed.  Is Lark Lane still vibey?

If by 'vibey' you mean full of pretentious cunts, then yes it is.

Had to walk from Old Hall Street to Hope Street late this afternoon. Went via Castle Street which is now closed off at the junction of Dale Street. Loads of people sitting about having a bevy. Lord Street  and Church Street was busy enough. Beggars and buskers a plenty and the seagulls are more vicious and swooping lower than ever.

And it's only a matter of time before someone is very seriously injured or worse by one of these cunts speeding around on lecky delivery bikes.

The Seagulls must be starving. We had a few by ours earlier. Had the back door open and I could hear the fuckers. Hope they got them two Yorskshire terriers a few doors down.

i probably come at it from more of a superficial, enjoyment level to be fair. not a work or business perspective when talking about Liverpool. but what you say is all too true.

yeah, it's the same down here for start-ups. without going into too much boring detail about my previous situation- getting affordable space is a joke sometimes. some of the amounts being asked for are massively prohibitive to people not born with a silver spoon in their mouths. this can lead to talent going to waste- certainly from people who need that help the most. that needs to be addressed all over the country with better government initiatives - and that includes local too.

because that's the main issue that confronts anyone who wants to take charge of their destiny- low initial overheads even if most of the guts of what you do is online. hopefully in future i will make another idea work and hit pay-dirt without having to house so much 'stuff'. which costs. which i can fall back on to until doomsday, fortunately.

luckily i also have great support too from long-time friends in business and we help each other. many don't. that really makes a difference. we're all in the same boat- trying to do things for ourselves without having to break bread with the sort of middle-manager wankers we all cant abide.

but any rewards will have been a long time coming. close to solving this problem for good and will move onto other ventures also. the open possibilities are what makes it worth doing for me. sitting in a counting house isn't the thing that really motivates. having a good time doing things i enjoy is what is all about- many people with lots are very unhappy and i have seen this and worked that out.

am sure you will get where you need to go because it's clear you have the drive and intelligence to put that into practice for yourself. in whatever you choose to do.
