The boss told Liverpoolfc.com: “At one point in the last few weeks it came up, the opportunity to sign one of the world’s best goalkeepers - then it’s not a long thought, to be honest, it’s only that you need to have a little talk with the owners! They were quite excited, so we did it.

“I think it’s something we have to do. He has nothing to do with the price, we have nothing to do with the price, it’s the market, that’s how it is and we will not think a lot about it.

“It shows the value of goalkeepers, of course, in this moment. It will happen a lot in the next few weeks I guess and that’s it, so we are really happy to have him here now.

“His English is surprisingly good and he is a real personality. He has meanwhile a lot of experience in the last few years, in Europe and in Rome, he’s played there on an outstandingly high level and he did the same at the World Cup.

“It was for Brazil not too lucky, that’s how it is, but then he played a really good World Cup. So it’s just a good moment.”

Klopp went on to praise Alisson’s all-round attributes, but insisted the stopper will need time to adapt to life in the Premier League and can still improve further.

“The full package is just good,” the boss said.

“How we all do, he needs to adapt to the English Premier League, that’s how it is. The league is different, the refs are different, the goalkeeper life is different in the Premier League.

“But that’s not important now because again, we got him here because of his existing strengths, which is in all goalkeeper departments the highest level.

“But of course he still has to adapt and age-wise he can improve, the best years are coming in the goalkeeper life, so it’s all good.”

No word on his shirt number so far.

Are we waiting for no. 1 to become available?

What number did he have at Roma? Maybe he wants the same again?

Edit: Just seen he went from 19 two seasons ago to 1 for the last two seasons. Maybe he fancies the challenge of winning it?

Just realised what could be the reason for signing him to a 6-year deal instead of 4 or 5 as is normal for most players.

I'd be willing to bet that it's to do with our accounting. If we were really, really confident that he's a great player and the risk he comes here and flops (or gets injured) is low, then one way to make the numbers work if Roma were being sticklers for a price higher than we wanted to pay is to stretch them across a longer period.

On a team's books a player is never measured by what the fee was, but by what they cost/year of their contract (or how the fee is amortised). So if he cost £66m, that's £11m/year across the 6 years of his deal. Add to that his wages (presumably something like £7.5m/year?) and you have a total player cost of £18.5m/season. Which is expensive but keeps him under £20m/season which is about the max we could probably possibly do (van Dijk is over that but not by much, and no-one else is close).

If it had been 5 years that amortisation cost goes from £11m/year to £13.2m/year, which is a big jump and puts total player cost at £20.7m/season. I'd bet that when Roma wouldn't fudge on the price we thought to ourselves "Hm, goalkeepers aren't injured that often, I wonder if he'd do 6 years?" and then approached his agent to see if we couldn't make that work.

Maybe if we had FFP issues, but profitability isnt a problem at the moment

Going to be weird having a good goalkeeper after letting Mignolet play over 200 games. Hopefully he has a VVD effect.

The VVD effect managed to make Karius look like a decent keeper on paper, to the point where until our last competitive match he was looking like he'd be our number 1 for the foreseeable future.

Imagine what it's gonna be like now with Alisson and VVD strutting about in the box. As well as Lovren who is also one of the best defenders in the world apparently, Robbo and Trent either side.

We'll be singing songs about this team for years, bit like our best Midfield in the world song from about 10 years ago.

I truly think this is the best transfer window I've ever seen. This is what man city fans must have felt like the day they found out they'd been bought by the Arabs.
