Certain dangerous play in the box in South America results in an indirect free kick rather than a penalty. I knew as soon as that was given that all the European fans would be like "what is going on?"

Edit: I think actually the rules are the same, but it's very rarely actually given in Europe, whereas you see it much more often in South America. It's usually when a defender makes a dangerous play but doesn't actually connect with the attacking player (high foot, for example).

One of the stranger rules I've heard of.

Stig calling me a cunt for no reason. Yeah, you're right, things don't change.

Weird, your profile says you've been negged but the thread itself doesn't. A phantom negging?

Edit: Looked at the wrong posts, there are negs.

I actually think it's quite sensible, but that could be because I grew up with it being called. I'd like to see it expanded, even, give the referee a halfway option between just waving off certain lesser fouls in the box and going to the nuclear option of a penalty. There are so many times when fairness would indicate something in between.

Watching the replay it's given for what we call in SA a "plancha," a dangerous play where one player goes over the ball with his knee locked. Can be a leg-breaker if it connects which is why referees down there take it so seriously. If it doesn't actually connect with the attacker you can't give a pen which is why he has the option of giving an indirect free kick.

I get what your saying but for me its either a penalty or it isn't. Pass backs aside of course. The refs can't even get the basics right so fuck complicating it even more.

On the rules front I wish ref would get to grips with this shielding the ball out of play. Far too often there's no attempt to play just obstructing the forward trying to keep the ball in play.
