I once paid for a very cheap England T-shirt in Spain and when I wore it to a pub one night I kept hearing the song Three Lions On A Shirt changed to Two Lions On A Shirt. Turned out it was a dodgy knock off T-shirt that had two lions on the badge rather than three.

Sweden seem to factor quite highly in the paths of recent World Cup winners. They are either in the same qualifying group as the eventual winners, in the same Group as the eventual winners, or getting knocked out by the eventual winners, or in the same side of the draw as the eventual winners.

World Cup 1990:

Sweden were drawn in a group alongside Brazil, Scotland and Costa Rica. Despite an unbeaten qualifying campaign where they finished ahead of England, they managed to lose all 3 group games. Costa Rica beating them in the last group game meant the Costa Ricans reached the knockout stage in their maiden tournament. They prompted got thrashed by Czechoslovakia in the last 16, before the Czechs were beaten by West Germany in the quarter final. The Germans went on to win the World Cup.

World Cup 1994:

Sweden were again drawn in Brazil's group, finishing behind them and ahead of Russia and Cameroon. Sweden and Brazil met again in the semi final, with Brazil edging it before going on to beat Italy on penalties in the final.

World Cup 1998:

Austria finished top of a qualifying group featuring Sweden and Scotland, who edged out the Swedes to finish 2nd and qualify themselves. The Scots went on to finish bottom of their group at the World Cup, behind Brazil, Norway and Morocco. Brazil went on to lose in the final, but Norway lost to Italy in the last 16. Italy then lost on penalties to eventual winners France in the quarter final.

World Cup 2002:

Sweden topped a World Cup group featuring England, Argentina and Nigeria. Argentina were a surprise early exit from the competition having been among the bookies' favourites alongside France, who also went home early. Sweden lost to a golden goal against Senegal in the last 16 before Senegal themselves lost to a golden goal against Turkey in the quarter final. The Turks were beaten by eventual champions Brazil in the semi final.

World Cup 2006:

Sweden finished 2nd behind England in a group featuring Paraguay and Trinidad & Tobago, and faced Germany in the last 16. The Germans hammered Sweden and went on to lose to eventual champions Italy in the semi final (a great game that was).

World Cup 2010:

Portugal qualified just ahead of Sweden for this World Cup, before going on to lose against Spain in the last 16. Spain went on to win the tournament.

World Cup 2014:

Germany qualified ahead of Sweden for this World Cup, and went on to lift the trophy.

World Cup 2018:

England beat Sweden in the quarter final. Based on the pattern showing Sweden's route to elimination, either England or Croatia could spring a surprise and actually win the World Cup this year!

Thats quite a wide range of criteria. You may as well have said had some of the same letters in their name as the winners

On the flip side, since 1990 any team that knocked Brazil out have reached the final at least.

1990: Argentina beat Brazil in the last 16 on their way to the final.

1994: Brazil won.

1998: Brazil reached the final.

2002: Brazil won.

2006: France beat Brazil in the quarter final on their way to the final.

2010: Netherlands beat Brazil in the quarter final on their way to the final.

2014: Germany thrashed Brazil in the semi final and won the tournament against Argentina.

2018: Belgium beat Brazil in the quarter final...

It is not like there are no neo nazis or other undesirable elements in virtually every country that takes part in the World Cup is it. So I do not get why people continually use a far right extremist in England as the prime example why they have such a downer on the England football team.
