2018 Pre-Season Match Thread

So what we've learnt - Sturridge aside our second string strike force isn't good enough. Solanke needs a loan. Origi and Markovic need new clubs. Midfield is ok. Defensively we probably need another good CB, cover for Robbo at LB. Moreno needs to be shipped out.

Karius needs to get himself a job modelling or as a soap actor. He shouldn't be anywhere near our nets. Sorry, he's gone. Mentally he's gone, and we'te not doing him any favours keeping him around.

Weird game. One of those where we make pretty much all the running but are wasteful in attack, lacking ruthlessness. And then the other side get a fortunate break, we get overstretched trying to force it, and then make a silly mistake to compound it all, and all of a sudden we're on the end of a bit of a hiding. Dortmund did little of note but they were ruthless when chances fell their way.

Apart from letting the ball slip through your fingers or slide beneath you and into the net, the one thing you don't do is tamely parry the ball back into the danger area like Karius did. That was on top of his shanked clearance in the first half that presented an open goal to the Dortmund player who shanked the chance wide from 40 yards. These errors can't be pinned on concussion, just poor decision making. However well the rest of the defence do, Karius could undo all the good work, and the pressure on him is too great. He needs time away from the spotlight to clear his head properly.

Origi looked awful in the first half. There was just no spark to his game, making his link-up play ineffectual, while he never looked like getting on the end of anything. Solanke - though unfortunate with a header just wide - wasn't much better. He also gave the ball away in a dangerous area that led to the penalty for Dortmund. Ojo was a bit too reactive rather than proactive, and his shooting lacked conviction.

There were positives. Sturridge has a sharpness about him, as did Lallana in the first half. Clyne looked steady at right back. All have had injury-blighted seasons last year so them looking sharp is welcome for our squad depth. Van Dijk looked totally unruffled in the first half and took his goal well. Fabinho looked composed in midfield. Markovic looked lively in the attacking third. Robertson simply picked up from where he left off last season. Keita is a real dynamo in midfield.

We usually get shit results when we play in the States, and it hampers our momentum when the season starts. We need to buck that trend.

Their one genuinely world class player up top made the difference. We'd none of ours playing. Again, it's a fitness exercise. Glorified training session. Good run out and money in the bank, both in terms of lungs and cash!

Are you on about Pulisic? He's good, but 'genuinely world class' is a bit of a stretch.

Matip injured again

Klopp says Matip injury is "a different muscle" to last season's problem, but that "it could be a small tear". Says "in one or two days we will know more" #LFC

Time to bring in another CB. We only have one really top class one, with Matip and Lovren as decent alternatives. With Matip unable to stay fit we too little both quality and depth in this position.

God forbid we're relying on Gomez. Who has no defensive intelligence whatsoever.

Nothing we didn't already know but:

We need another CB. Matip is made of quavers.

We need to get the Fekir deal done. Outside of our starting front three, lacking cutting edge aside from Sturridge, who we can't rely on because of his horrific injury record.

Karius needs to go out on loan somewhere outside of the UK and should be pulled from the next 2 US games. He's fucked mentally.

Moreno is still a liability.

I find it hard to believe karius is better than either Grabara or the other young Irish keeper.

He is shocking!

Sad to watch on a human level. Taking aside the gigantic money he is earning. Grabara and Kelleher are two very good young keepers who could go far in the game. We would have learned more by seeing them play tonight.

Joel Matip’s injury during Liverpool’s 3-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund was the “most negative thing about the day” in Jurgen Klopp’s eyes.

The defender limped off 22 minutes into the pre-season friendly, three games after returning to play following surgery on an injury that cut short his 2017/18 season.

Klopp said the source of pain on Sunday was a different complaint that appeared to be a small muscle tear, although the extent of any damage had not been confirmed.

“It’s not the same injury. It’s another muscle – it looks like, hopefully, only a little tear,” the manager told liverpoolfc.com at a post-match press conference.

“We will see, but we cannot say anymore about it now. It is of course the most negative thing about the day. It’s not cool. Things like this can happen, but you don’t want them to.

“Maybe tomorrow or the day after tomorrow we will know more, but in this moment we only know that it was too painful for him to carry on.”

Matip’s last appearance of 2017/18 came in March, with the Cameroon centre-back sustaining a thigh injury against Crystal Palace and subsequently undergoing an operation.

He made his return to action in Liverpool’s 0-0 friendly against Bury on July 14 and started again against Blackburn Rovers, which the Reds won 2-0.

Liverpool took the lead three minutes after Matip was replaced by Joseph Gomez during the International Champions Cup tie at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday.

Virgil van Dijk pulled off a magnificent header from the edge of the six-yard box, supplied by Andrew Robertson following a short corner by Rafael Camacho.

Dortmund levelled up in the 66th, Christian Pulisic scoring from a penalty conceded by James Milner with a foul.

The sides looked to be heading for penalties until the 89th minute when Pulisic struck again following a counterattack.

Three minutes into injury time and the Bundesliga side snatched their third, this time off the right foot of Jacob Bruun Larsen at point-blank range.

“On a day like this, you have to stay strong and show desire still or kind of greed that you at least want to keep the result at 1-1,” Klopp said.

“We have to learn from it, that’s how it is, and then we have to go again.”

But the collapse can only have added to any doubts embattled keeper Loris Karius may have had about the future, especially in light of Liverpool’s world record purchase of Roma stopper Alisson last week.

In a shot at critics, Karius posted a message via an Instagram story after the game that read: “To those who take joy in seeing other people fail or suffer, I feel for you.

“Whatever it is that’s happening in your life to hold this much anger and hate, I pray that it passes and good things come to you.”

Even that weak arse message he’s put up is just a carbon copy of Lewis Hamilton’s one earlier. Probably his way of trying to become celeb friends with him the fucking daft cunt. Nobody is happy at seeing you suffer. They’re fucking livid you’re getting paid a kings ransom to not take your fucking job serious enough to improve you fucking knobhead.
