Xherdan Shaqiri

So many title winning teams are defined by the players they bought in the immediately preceding window — Petit and Overmars for Arsenal in 97; Cantona into United in 92; Drogba, Cech & Carvalho to Chelsea in 04 and Kante again in 2016 - the list goes on. Whether there is tangible outcome remains to be seen for us - but Klopp undeniably played another blinder last summer, and with more goals and less appearances than Mahrez across the M62 at a complete fraction of the price, Shaqiri could prove cream of the crop. Great signing.

The Mahrez point is interesting. He's better than Shaqiri, and anybody would rather have him if you need a quality starting winger. But as an additional attacking piece that won't start every game and provide a quality rotation and bench option? You pick Shaqiri every time, especially given the price. Such a smarter piece of business than what City did given a depth option is exactly what both teams needed.

Pardon?

Yes, former Player of the Year and key piece of the biggest underdog  title winning side of all time Riyad Mahrez is better than Xherdan Shaqiri. Not too controversial. But like I said, Shaqiri is a better fit in his role and was a better signing.
