Films from the 70s, 80s and 90s, that are underrated and/or largely forgotten

The Gambler - 1974 film starring James Caan (not the shite remake with Mark Wahlberg) about a degenerate gambler. I reckon it's Caan's best performance, and the final scene should be far more iconic. It's Taxi Driver levels of self destruction.

 

Thief - 1981, Caan again. Top drawer early Michael Mann, with a cracking soundtrack from Tangerine Dream. I like how the material and actors scream '70s, but the synth-laden tunes turn it into a proper neo-noir of the early '80s. Not totally forgotten, but in lists of the best films of the period, it obviously falls towards the bottom due to the likes of Raiders, Empire, Blade Runner American Werewolf, The Thing etc.

 

The Music Of Chance - 1993 film with James Spader and Mandy Patinkin, based on the book of the same name. Spader nails it as a greasy poker player, and however strange things get, it all feels completely organic. The atmosphere builds into something absurd but very unsettling. One of the few films that makes me want to read the book afterwards.

Superb shouts on the James Caan films. I think I've seen The Music of Chance but I don't remember it clearly.

It has to forgotten if not underrated because it took me several decades to find it (admittedly me not being able to remember  the title would have been a major factor).

 

A family of Cheyenne trying to survive chased by some Crow baddies. If you like films like Jeremiah Johnston, A Man Called Horse etc, it would be right up your street.

 

Speaking of, A Man In the Wilderness (1971) has to be another underappreciated and forgotten film, because I don't remember anybody talking about it when The Revenant came out, which is a sort of a remake, since it was based on the same memoir.

 

Bruce Beresford's Black Robe in the similar vein, also not frequently mentioned.

I'd also add Martin Sheen in 'Eagle's Wing' to your excellent suggestions in this genre Sasa. Sadly it hasn't aged so well unlike the big Daddy of this theme 'Little Big Man' which still manages to get better with each further viewing. Black Robe was also brutal but fantastic . These classics unfortunately get overlooked for the big Hollywood crowd pleasers like Dances with Wolves.
