Films from the 70s, 80s and 90s, that are underrated and/or largely forgotten

Paul Schrader’s Hardcore is very underrated in my opinion, probably the second best film Paul Schrader has been involved in after Taxi Driver.

William Friedkin’s Scorcerer was underrated and underseen for a while but is enjoying something of a re-evaluation.

Johnathan Demme’s Something Wild is fantastic fun. Starts off as an enjoyable road movie before turning into something darker and Melanie Griffith has never been hotter.

Not sure how an IMDb rating would apply to forgotten though, unless you also want to look at the vote count. The three films I listed are all probably above 6.5/10 but the last time I looked (which was back when they still had a message board) Sorcerer had less than 15k votes which is tiny in the scheme of things. Cronenberg’s eXistenZ which was a fairly small film had over 80k for example.

Yes, I don't think you can find an objective parameter for forgotten, but IMDB rating would at least serve as a fairly objective indicator for underrated.

Of all the films mentioned so far, I'd say Hardcore would alone fit the forgotten category, but also at a stretch, since you know it, I know it very well and know people who also know it and like it.

Red Rock West. 90’s noir thriller starring Nicholas Cage, Dennis Hopper, Lara Flynn Boyle.

This was when Nicholas Cage used to appear in good films instead of some of the tripe he’s been in over the last few years. If you haven’t seen it I would highly recommend it

If I remember rightly, you need to do a few stretches before watching it, because the plot is twisty as fuck.

To Live and Die in LA. Excellent film that is not exactly forgotten but goes under radar due to William Petersen and Willem Dafoe's more recent work

White Sands,Willem Dafoe again plus Sam L Jackson,Micky Rourke and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantanio's beautiful and magnificent breasts. I watched in the pictures with the missus and couldn't believe the size of them. I forgot the plot of the film but thought it was quite decent.

White Sands belongs in the 90s forgotten films but I just wanted to mention the breasts.
