He was world class at his job. He job wasn't to create or dictate play. It was to hunt the ball of Mark a number 10 out the game. He did that better than anyone else around at the time, then he gave it to Alonso. Look at the 2007 Champions League final, Kaka doesn't get a yard of space till Mascherano comes off with us chasing the game. He comes off Kaka gets the ball and plays Inzaghi in for the killer 2nd.

Saying he isn't world class is like saying a CB isn't because they are not great and bringing the ball out and starting play or scoring goals.

@TheHowieLama is spot on though, Fabinho is the better around player

I am not sure how you can be a word class footballer if you are not that good at football.

Mascherano was an excellent destroyer. Sit him in front of the back four and his was aggressive and nipping into everyone. He could read the game well, break things up and then pass it onto to someone who could play.

No world class player is so limited. All the great defensive midfielders could player football.

As yourself this question. Is Maguire world class? Nope. Why? Some say he is a top notch defender etc but the other parts of his game are shite. Look at VVD a superb defender, he can read the game etc but he can pass as well as anyone in the team. Just look at that pass for Mane against Bayern Munich. Its that which makes him world class and not just his defending

Carragher, Hyypia, Terry none of whom were as good as VVD on the ball all as good as anyone in the world in their era at CB.

Mascherano was far better on the ball than he got credit for, his passing was simple but he kept possession and got us moving forward. Not everyone is a Xabi Alonso and he allowed Alonso to play his game.

Not better as a defensive midfielder

There's a good reason one played for 6 or so years as a Liverpool DM in a team that bar 01 and 05 saw little league or European success, regularly finishing with 60 or so points. The other played 150 times for us in a team that was contenders in Europe, had our best premier league season before last year and finished in the mid 70s in points totals before Europe's best team wanted him. Yeah he slotted back in CB for Barcelona because he wasn't suited as a single holding player. Around 140 caps for Argentina and over 300 games for Barcelona in their greatest teams
