Buvac gone?

It’s one of Liverpool’s most important weeks in many years, but it’s started off pretty disastrously.

Jurgen Klopp’s right-hand man, Zeljko Buvac, has inexplicably left the club just days before the second-leg of their Champions League semi-final with Roma.

But that’s not the only big match for the Reds this week with a chance to clinch a top-four spot against Chelsea on Sunday.

And there is some confusion as to quite why Buvac has left the club at such a crucial time of the season.

The club have come out to deny reports that he’s left for good by saying that Buvac “hasn't stepped down but is spending some time away from the club due to personal reasons.”

It’s all a bit mysterious.

But there’s one man getting a fair share of blame for Buvac’s departure - goalkeeper coach John Achterberg.

In a report in The Times, Paul Joyce recalls an incident between Buvac and Achterberg back in November which saw the assistant manager refuse to talk to the goalkeeper coach.

The report states: “He was furious with the goalkeeper coach, John Achterberg, in a game against Chelsea last November when the Londoners scored an equaliser while Liverpool were trying to bring on the substitute Adam Lallana and switch to a five-man backline. Buvac refused to speak to Achterberg, who liaises with the fourth official over substitutions.”

Liverpool ended up drawing that match 1-1 and a clip has emerged of Buvac looking absolutely fuming at full-time.

It may seem a petty clash, but Joyce has included it in his report for a reason.

And many Liverpool fans are convinced that, regardless of this argument, Achterberg has some role to play in Buvac’s decision to leave.

One thing is for sure, you simply can’t underplay the role Buvac plays alongside Klopp, having worked with him at Mainz, Dortmund and now Liverpool.

In fact, Klopp even called him the “brains” behind his management.

“I am nothing without them," Klopp said.

“I think the biggest strength of strong people is to put people around you who are stronger in specific cases than yourself. Only if you are insecure you wouldn’t do that.

“When I started I was alone, but that was years ago and the world has changed so it’s really important we have this quality around.

“Zeljko is the brain, Pete is the eye."

Something went on with Achtheberg Saturday aswell. Couldn't quite see but he jumped up and went down the tunnel. Don't know if he got sent off or what.

Not only has he broke down every keeper we've had under his coaching but he's now breaking up management dream teams. Super.

This Arsenal story started in his own country in a newspaper which was supposedly the first to print he was coming to Liverpool as Klopps assistant. Just seems incredibly strange when a partnership has existed for 20 years he would want to go back into front line managership. Personally I cannot see Arsenal making him manager but thats just my take.
