England in the world cup this Summer

I think the last time I actually wanted England to do well in a tournament was Euro 2004, and even at that time it was nothing like either the 1990 World Cup or Euro 96, where I wanted them to win it. As you get older, you realise the England team is merely pandering to the London-based (and now Salford-based) media and is followed by Brexiteer twats who like to add the name of their nondescript town to an England flag, who sing 'God Save The Queen' proudly, and whose idea of a holiday abroad is getting pissed on cheap lager in a British pub on the Costa Del Sol while shouting loudly for an order of egg and chips.

Haven’t watched an England game in time, know nothing about who’s in the squad or team and care even less. Gareth Southgate taking England to a World Cup in Russia, though.

If there isn’t a self-righteous, overblown media inquest afterwards into what went wrong both on and off the pitch, Sam Allardyce is going to win the league at Everton.

Could well plumb new depths this time out, with any luck. It’s become a decent comedy event every second summer, watching the disaster unfold through the tortured reactions of idiots.

Not a huge England fan - however I may very well jump on the bandwagon now that the Owl has fucked off. If he goes 3 at the back, Gomez, Stones, Cahill - with Rose and Walker on the wings I think that is quite solid.

Henderson/Dier with Willshire in the middle, relatively sollid and up front, Ali, Sterling and Kane is quite good.

They are far from shit. But, the coach is shit.

If we get a good start against Nigeria I reckon we can hold Argentina to a draw and then beat Iceland to top the group.

Extremely confident going into this.

We are in a difficult group - although, would be extremely satisfying for Mo, to knock out Luis! We win that, I think we are through.

I am a total fair weather England fan,  Mexico 70 was magnificent as a kid . England as champions, all the matches live and in colour and a fantastic Brasil team at their peak,

For decades afterwards I would look forward to the WC or EC but after 96 I jibbed them off completely, Too much disappointment , shite managers , scumbag press and some players I detested,

I'll watch the England games with detached interest and if they do well I'll manage a small flicker of interest, When they fail I'll be a smug cunt.

If England get to the final, and they’re winning 4-0 with 5 minutes to go, with goals from Lallana, Chamberlain, Hendo, and TAA, I’ll probably raise a smile and become a supporter for an hour.

Yep.

Handy group for England. Whether they finish first or second its likely they get Poland or Colombia in the last 16.  They should be looking at last 8 at a minimum. Then it gets into Brazil and Germany territory. Game over.

Opening game Russia v Saudi Arabia. Exciting.

What has he done to justify being England manager? I thought it was a joke.

Nothing, absolutely nothing!

The whole set up is a sham, the players - who usually aren’t great to begin with - end up playing well within themselves and coming home with their tails between their legs.

Southgate is a company man, keeps his nose clean, and has never achieved anything of note to upset anyone of note. As such, he might just do a bit better than the series of underperformers who came before him. The England job used to be seen as a sort of pinnacle, but those days are well gone, as there are multiple managers in the Prem who are much better, earning more money, and leading better teams.

Last time England were interesting was Euro 96, then Italia 90 before that. Oh, and maybe Owens goal when he was coming through against Argentina. But generally the whole thing is flat. I have very little expectation for this summer in Russia, and hope the fans get home without any serious injury or death as the Russians are not to be messed with, as I just heard Tony Soprano say to his sister.

I don't see a problem with Southgate being manager. If the FA want to restrict themselves to English managers then there isn't much out there. I'd have gone all out for Howe or Dyche, personally but Southgate is better than Pards, Big Sam, Hodgson, Hoddle, Redknapp ,etc...

Not even 5 per cent of my LFC interest but I will still take it in & hope England do well, particularly as there could be 4 or 5 of our lads there .

On a separate point , I wonder if there are any other large swathes of a country's population who due to ( presumably ) self-loathing and regional politics , don't want their country win the world cup.

They will get out of the group then shit the bed against France or someone.

To be fair to them that probably wouldn't be a case of shitting the bed, just being beaten by a far superior set of footballers with a much better manager. England are average.
