Always love booking a few hours into my local Richer Sounds sound booth to try stuff out. I'll often take my own speakers or other parts of my home systems to mix and match and to try and best isolate to Richer component in context.

I never buy owt from them though, always go away and buy cheaper from the net, the Richer guys must fucking hate me.

What are your Tannoy's like Jim? A new set of floor standers are probably the next thing on my list tbh, my own Quad 22Ls still sound lovely but they're about 15 years old and I wouldn't mind something which packs a bit more thud in the bottom end. Not a priority though.

Just Christened the new CD player with a couple of my favourite Suicidal Tendencies records, both of which I know really well, and I must say it sounded rather fantastic; big and authoritive with a solid bass and great imaging. Very happy indeed.

Glad to hear it mate, it's a nice looking unit as well I think.

I love the Tannoy's mate. They're the best speakers I've ever owned. To be honest, they're probably far too big for the room they're in and I rarely push them too much since I've got neighbours to consider, but what most surprised me is how good they sound at low volume also. The bass is more than adequate when I do have them loud, no need for a sub

I have my floor standing Quad 22Ls up in the loft, it's a big space so thankfully I don't have the space issue anymore.

My newer Quad S2s live in the back living room, they're bookshelf and sit on some Atacama stands. Although they're only small they sound amazing, the bass is incredible.

Before I bought those S2s I was considering Q Acoustics Concept 20s, very highly rated with a tiny footprint. Might be the way to go if space is limited? Richer Sounds stock them too.

Yeah, I've heard good things about Q Acoustics. I'm hopefully moving house in the near future and probably not going to upgrade until then. I like the idea of getting some fuck off KEF's at some point. I haven't actually listened to any but am drawn to them for some reason

Make sure to drop in a post if and when you next upgrade Jim, always curious to see what other people are buying and listening through.

You have any experience of cheap valve preamps ? Something else which I'm keeping half an eye on.

Yeah of course, will do. You too mate, always good to hear recommendations.

I've never really looked into tube amps as have just assumed they'd be out of my price range. I'm not sure how much you'd have to pay to get a good one. I've just had a pay rise though, so maybe in the future (not earning Fowler1972 money or anything like that). They're meant to be the dogs bollocks but I'm a bit of a novice in fairness Carvalho

This all sounds a level above my plan to investigate a little Denon and some Q Acoustics 3010i speakers from Richer Sounds. I just need something to listen to new CDs on whilst I'm too lazy to rip them to FLAC files and stick them onto something portable, which is my usual routine.

You could do a hell of a lot worse than the Marantz cd6006 that both Jim and myself are using atm. Great value, exceptional sound.

Sounds great, but I'm not going down the separates route, I'll just be going for a little mini hi-fi. I started down the rabbit hole of home cinema and ended up with too much electronics, so I've tried to pare it all back since I last moved. I've no amp or receiver now.

I can't help buying CDs though.

We have a Denon (M39) that we bought a few years ago, paired with Q Acoustic speakers; it's a great little setup, albeit I'm a complete novice. Well worth the money.

The wife bought me a turntable with built in amp, which is connected and sounds good but I'm sure I can get more from the system - how would I go about it, audiophiles? We're extending the house this year so the stereo needs to perform in a larger space.

Get yourself a decent amp and it will transform your system mate, making your music sound bigger, broader, brighter, just more present and more real. Doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg either.
