Liverpool are using Austrian Hans Leitert as a goalkeeping consultant to help their coach John Achterberg.

Reports emanating from Austria claimed Leitert, the former Austria Vienna keeper, had been appointed Liverpool's head of goalkeeping but the 45-year-old has been working with the Reds in an advisory capacity for the past 15 months.

Leitert, who worked at Tottenham previously under Juande Ramos, offers Liverpool's scouting department pointers on potential new targets and is on hand to give advice on current keepers when required.

Liverpool's goalkeepers have come in for considerable criticism over recent seasons with Jurgen Klopp swapping between Simon Mignolet and current No 1 Loris Karius. Liverpool also have highly-rated Wales international Danny Ward in reserve but have been showing an interest in Roma's Brazilian keeper Alisson.

Achterberg, formerly of Tranmere Rovers, is a popular figure behind the scenes at Anfield and well regarded as one of the most dedicated coaches at the club.

Klopp has faith in his judgement but recognises a need for specialist help to share the workload required.

Leitert, who has worked with FIFA, the Spanish FA and UEFA, was forced to retire from playing due to a broken wrist but went on to become head of goalkeeping for Red Bull Global Soccer between 2010 and 2015, working in New York, Salzburg and Leipzig.
