VAR Thoughts?

The way the Arsenal players set up for that routine at free kicks is suspect.

Four of them start in offside positions, then run across the defenders line and move into an onside position by pushing in between the defenders as the kick is taken.

That requires precision timing and execution or at least one of them will be offside when the ball is kicked.

If it’s looked at closely, I would expect there’s at least one incidence of obstruction to the defenders as well as they push in to get onside.
The chaos of their movement deflects from offences, just as their blocking goalkeepers at corners relies on a melee to cover holding and pushing.

I suppose some will say it’s clever, you could see them congratulating their set piece coach on the touch line when the goal was given, but as with much of their tactics and play, it relies on pushing the rules to the limits and being as cynical as they can get away with.

They’ve been doing it for years though, I recall the back line all signalling for offside at the same time with their arms up, always the arm away from the goal to enhance the impression to the Lino, and their arms outstretched whenever they appeal for a free kick, yellow card etc..

I think that penalty given against the Mancs was a shocker. Obviously I enjoy the schadenfreude of them being on the wrong end of it, but that might be us in a few weeks time.

What happened to the new higher threshold? There’s no way you could argue that was a clear and obvious error, so why the fuck is Michael Oliver involving himself?

Most teams have been on the wrong end of these types of decisions, Wolves in particular for some reason, and we’ve had our share over the years. One team never seems to get these stinkers though, I can’t remember the last time City were up in arms that a VAR decision had gone against them.

That offside from last night was one of the worst examples of VAR usage have seen since VARs inception.

4 minutes to support the decision that was made in real-time.

Yeah but you've got to give them time to decide which result they want.

And what happened to the PL implementing semi automated offside? That must be a big bag of shite as it was supposed to come in at the start of the season and then I'm sure they said pushed back till after the October international break. Although I might have imagined that last bit.

Last I heard is that they pushed it to next season because they reckon there are glitches in it.

Thats not offside at all. The 'offside' player neither touches the ball, interferes with the defending team nor gains an advantage. Shocking stuff yet again.

I saw it on motd last night. Under the current laws, I can't work out what they think they were applying. I do think we should have a rule a really if you're in the box, you're interfering. What else are you there for? But they're not the rules now.

For me, he does. The angle from behind the goal shows the keeper step right as the offside player tries to catch it with his trailing foot. The keeper was reacting to that moment to cover the near post. That prevented him making any attempt to get across to the guy who wasn’t offside.

And here lies yet another and probably VAR's biggest problem, they now look for ways to disallow goals rather than allow them to stand.

I've said it before but VARs perfect day is a 1-0 win from a retaken penalty after a keeper was 1mm off his line when saving the first effort, from a penalty awarded that nobody on the pitch or watching appealed for.

If they could've disallowed a couple of nice goals on the way for marginal calls, bonus.
