Coutinho’s replacement...

Paul Joyce pretty much reiterating what Bascombe said.

Barcelona are proposing a transfer fee worth about £142 million for Philippe Coutinho as they move closer to signing the Brazil forward who has rejected Liverpool’s last-ditch attempts to keep him at Anfield

The two clubs are now in contact, via the player’s representatives, over what would be the third-biggest transfer in history. Barcelona are willing to pay about £106 million as a base figure with the remaining £36m no longer linked to unrealistic bonus payments. (Paul Joyce)

Liverpool have made attempts in recent days to persuade Coutinho to stay but their difficulty is that the issue is not about money. His heart is set on moving to the Nou Camp this month. Coutinho believes a deal is imminent. (Paul Joyce)

Last ditch attempts?

He's on a long term contract and as others have said, with the world cup round the corner it's our hand which remains firmly on the tiller.

Last ditch attempt? You're going nowhere you snivelling cunt, that should just about do it.

If he goes then he goes on OUR terms at a fee set by us.

Last ditch attempt? FOAD you entourage of silly twats.

Exactly. The way this is playing out and the tone being used by both sides would almost suggest we're trying to persuade a player to sign for us - not that we're dealing with a player who is integral to our side in a very important season who - completely unreasonably IMO - wants to leave during the fucking middle of it.

I like the look of Lemar. I wasn’t completely sold as he’s not the same as Coutinho, but then who is? Lemar is faster and stronger, can play wide and also through the middle. He needs more guile but that will hopefully come. He’s also young enough to improve.

The closest we have to Coutinho in the Prem, who might be attainable, would be Sanchez or Ozil. A hybrid of those players gives us what Coutinho does - vision, skill, shooting and goals from nothing. Ozil has the vision and skill, Sanchez is a bit more explosive and can score goals from nothing. I’d take either of them on a Bosman, but they will probably have their pick of clubs if they get to that stage.

Arguably neither has the hunger we require. There’s a sense that they’ve seen it all before. Obviously they are looking for a massive payday if their contracts wind down to zero, but are they still hungry to win things and give their all on the pitch? The quality is there but I’m not sure about the hunger.

Fortunately Jurgen seems to have a keen sense in sifting through this sort of thing.

I think Lemar is the one we need. Him, Keita and VVD move the team forward, even if Coutinho leaves.
