I'm sure that one of my Famous Five books when I was a kid had an uncensored instance of the n-word, from when George falls into some soot or something, but I've half convinced myself that it's a phony memory because I don't recall anyone else ever mentioning it.

Probably true, those books are notoriously "outdated".

Aye I’m 58, read most of Alan Garner’s books whilst at school. The weird stone and the sequel was set around Alderley edge in Cheshire, I went for a walk around there a couple of years ago when I dropped the Mrs off at Manchester airport and there’s a pub named the Wizard there! Lovely walk and views as well

The Weirdstone was brilliant, probably my favourite as a kid. We had a teacher when I was about 8 who used to read us a chapter just before hometime. I liked it that much I bought it before he got halfway through it.

I think it was something like 20p from WH Smiths.

 

I've just looked back on this thread and seen you've already mentioned these books earlier.
