I used to be able to do them when I was at school (the first time they came out!) -

 

Basically there was about 6-10 'rules' you had to learn to get any piece to where you needed it, and once you knew those rules, you could solve the cube - it ways dead easy. So basically, it worked like this:

 

a) To get one corner to move to the opposite corner = Left, Up, Up, Right, Up, Left, Left

b) To get one side piece to the reverse = Down, Left, Left, Up, Right

 

etc etc

 

(those aren't real moves, just examples of how it worked).

Yes, I also thought my daughter how to do it, on the understanding that she told no one else. 

It is just a case of learning/memorising a few routines for each section.
