What are the perks of your job - intended and unintended

I work for a very small firm, doing their IT mainly, but as it's a small company you're also expected to do other things that need doing.

Pros:

Flexible working allows me to do the school run once a week when I work from home.

Good pension contribution from work.

Life insurance.

Health insurance.

Totally unsupervised expenses. We've got 2 credit cards and when we're out on work business we're expected to use them.

Generally, we manage ourselves.

Gym membership (local to the office)

Cons:

Small company means sometimes you get handed a shit job and you do it.

No holiday. I mean, we get holiday but if something needs to be done it needs to be done. I'm always on call.

Over 1 hour each way commute.

The pros far outweigh the cons right now.

Pros:

- I can work from home twice a week and from anywhere (usually Italy) for 3 months a year.

- I am largely left alone to do my work although I am part of a team

- Free fruit, tea&coffee, booze (although I dont bother with it but some do)

- Boardgames afternoon once a month where the entire office brings in food and we sit about playing games

- Poker evenings

- Flexi hours. Core hours are 10 - 3 but you can start & finish whenever you want around that.

- The folks in the office are really friendly.

- Comparatively low stress compared to other places I have worked

- Can wear whatever we want

Cons:

The work is dull as dishwater

I forgot one!

Every now and again I come across a real expert in the field who genuinely loves what he does. A mate on our team chairs loads of forum, solves complex cases regarding fires and explosions and is a pleasure to talk to. I love people who can do stuff.

Perks

  • Small family business with close ties to the community
  • Free tea and coffee (but it's instant so I have my own cafetiere like a big shot)
  • Team I work with are all sound
  • Wages competitive for my current skill set
  • Little pressure, I take nothing home with me the second I clock off
  • 20 minute commute to work
  • Close to town
  • Flexible if I need time off for ToddleD or anything else
  • Discount on a host of medical, first Aid and Health & Safety supplies
  • Big box of "expired" things which you can take which are perfectly fine but can't be sold.  I have about 2 full first aid kits in my house in case of emergency because the latext gloves "expired" and they can't guarantee they're sterile

  • Fantastic scenic view from the office window?

It's not a slight btw. I'm public sector so seeing a 40% bonus genuinely stunned me.

I'm assuming bonuses don't even exist in your field. My employers have never given me a single penny more than my intended salary in cash or in kind

Cons? Yeah, plenty but whatyagoando?

It takes five minutes to get to work and it's under 13° to the equator.

Pros

I love my work

Great colleagues

Trying to do something good I believe in

Long hours, but flexible, including ability to work from home if desired

Annual conference, travel if desired/time

Free tea, coffee, meals at various functions and so on

Cons

Working conditions in America are not very secure

Indiana is an 'employment at will' State, which seems pretty antiquated

Pro/Con

America is a vast and beautiful country and it has been enjoyable exploring

It's also a bit nuts in a political sense!

Yep, pretty much. Also pay freeze for the majority of my time here too. I'm moving to the private sector within the next 5 years, just in the middle of my degree etc. Public sector doesn't suit my industry (software developer), but they gave me a start when I had zero experience or qualifications so I'll always be grateful for that.
