Van Dijk's move to Liverpool a million miles away as angry Saints dig their heels in

Yahoo Sports StaffYahoo Sport UK2 Aug 2017, 14:46

Southampton would have been more open to selling Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool this summer if the player and his agent had gone about it in the right way.

The 26-year-old Dutch international is reported to want to move to Anfield but Liverpool were forced to issue an apology to the Saints after an unsolicited approach to him earlier this year.

The matter was declared closed but van Dijk has reiterated his determination to leave the club and sign for the Reds, Yahoo Sport has learned.

Southampton held talks with van Dijk and his agent in the last 24 hours, with the defender who signed a long-term contract with the club last summer making it clear once again that he had set his heart on a move to Liverpool.

This has been Van Dijk’s stance since the middle of May, when he told senior Southampton staff that he wanted to leave, before the club were made aware that he had already held ‘extensive’ talks with Liverpool over what the player, his agent and Anfield officials hoped would develop into a £50m summer move.

Yet Southampton have remained firm throughout this summer that they would not sanction a deal for Van Dijk to leave, just a year after he signed a new six-year contract with the club that gave him a chance to make his name in the Premier League.

Liverpool issued an apology to Southampton in June after their illegal approaches for Van Dijk became public and stated they would make no further moves for the Dutch defender unless they were given the green light by Saints officials.

However, Southampton officials are resolute in their desire to stand by their decision not to sell him this summer and informed the Dutch defender that they would not consider any offers from Liverpool or any other club in this transfer window.

Southampton insiders are bemused by van Dijk’s bullish attempts to plot a route out of the club and have told the player and his agent that they would have been move open to doing a deal with Liverpool if talks between the two clubs had taken place in more conventional fashion.

We understand that Saints are now determined to stand by their decision not to sell, with their stance hardened by the attitude of the player and his agent over the last few months in what they view as highly disrespectful to their club at all levels.

It now appears to be harder than ever for the player to be re-integrated into the Southampton first team set-up, with the player making all the wrong moves as he looks to plot a route to Anfield during this month.

If you read up on his move from Celtic you'd presume that Southampton took Celtic out for a meal and made sweet love!

You'd also think they had a problem with selling to us because it would be the 6th player from one club in recent history, unlike say signing Fox, Boruc, Forster, Wanyama, and Van Djik from Celtic like they did!

They may have a problem with the fact he had recently signed a new contract - unlike when he was at Celtic and recently signed a contract!

Cunts. They would have sold him if they had an auction. So ask for that fee!

However - bear in mind, there are absolutely no quotes or anything in that article. Pure conjecture - and Yahoo sports!

It's just complete nonsense. Why would they have been happier to sell had Van Dijk not spoke to Liverpool beforehand? The only way they are going to sell a player they clearly don't want to us if they get a stupid offer or the player kicks up that much of a stink it's worse to keep him around.

The only thing you can really take from the article if any of it has been leaked from Southampton to them is that they would have been happier to sell if he didn't have a specific destination in mind because they could then have an auction.

He will be here by the end of the window and if we play it right it will be for less than £60m.

Sounds logical right enough...

This should be Van Dijk's nuclear option. If it continues to drag on into the start of the season just come out and say you don't know what they're moaning about. They tapped me up from Celtic and have done so for every other player they've signed that I'm aware of. Just bodybag the whole club so it's untenable.

Am I right in thinking that they recently released a statement saying they had no intention of selling him, or any players?

That they wanted to integrate him back into the team.

But, they would have sold him had he and his agent behaved themselves?

Seriously - fuck off you pointless quims. Whether he signs or not - these cunts need twating next season.

Send them the money alongside a picture of an empty landing dock 'where's your liners gone? Oh yeah we got them as well!'

I'm going to throw a wild guess in that they knew about the Van Dijk situation with us a long time ago. It might also explain why the team were being such cunts in that nothing game for them at the end of last season. Had they stopped us getting into the champions league their captain might not have been as eager to leave.

Everton levels of conspiracy theory here

I still dont see southampton's reasoning not to do the deal if as reported he's told them he wont rejoin his 'teammates' in training and wont play for the club again.

Yeah ok, that makes them look tough but what about new players they want to bring in? How's that position going to encourage anyone to sign for them if they're just going to block players going to bigger clubs or, isolate them if they dont do as they're told?

Everyone knows this is a shit situation that needs resolving but instead, southampton are intent on making a bad fist of it.

I hope they sell him to Chelsea or somewhere else. He's not worth the money they're demanding for him. He was worth £30m in January and he's been injured for the last 6 months and now he's suddenly worth £70m?

He's good but he's not Bonucci or Godin. Bonucci went for £42m. What's he done to deserve a £40m increase in price? He finished mid table with an average team and won nothing. He's played well for half of one season. We shouldn't allow them to dictate terms on a player that is obviously desperate to leave them.

It's just turned into a pissing competition now, a power struggle. Fuck them all off and move on to another target.

I don't any new players will give a shit mate. Most of them only look short term and if Southampton will pay them more than where they are now, they will still go there and worry about everything else later.

He signed a 6 year contract last year which he had no intention of seeing out which I'm sure he got a decent wedge from.

For what it's worth, I reckon he will go elsewhere as Southampton will fuck us about so much
