I fully understand the hesitance given the VVD fee. But out of interest, who are the other central defenders who are good enough to improve us enough, and who offer better value for money?

 

The whole world knows we have cash and need a central defender. I suspect we would be quoted stupid money for even modest defenders.

 

I would pinch my nose due to the stench of the game and its largesse, then I would slap the money down to sign VVD.

 

Mind you, I really like the look of Nathan Ake. Would Chelsea do business with us? How much would he cost? He has pace and is an athletic sort of central defender. VVD is clearly better in the air, but I think Nathan Ake is a good player.

Ake's signing for Bournemouth for 25mil isn't he? And isn't he a left back?

I haven't noticed him much at all to be honest. I dont watch MOTD and only saw him when he played against us but I am not really interested in the opposition. Saints have a very good record against us in recent seasons and their defence is most of the reason why. How much of that is simply down to VVD I have no idea.

Is VVD gonna look as effective when he is asked to defend in a team that isn't camped in its own half with 9 men behind the ball most of the time?

 

He is gonna face exactly what our existing centre halves face and that is being on the half way line watching our useless full backs lose the ball high up and chasing back as the ball is smashed long into the space they have vacated or straight at him as runners bear down on him with zero protection in front of him.....a totally different game.

I strongly disagree. I don't think it's a case of doubling the clubs transfer record on a player who's just coming back from a serious enough injury or get off the pot. i believe there is a middle ground that can still achieve success. In fact one could argue, with finite resources, it would be more likely to acheive success, given it's a 25 man squad.

I'd rather we fixed our problems all over the park and get the depth we want....of course if we do that and pay 70m for VVD then fair do's but can you see us doing that...

 

I'm just not keen on spending that much on him. For £60-£70m you should be getting the best CB in the world for that and he isn't it.

 

We need Keita or someone like him to protect the back 4. Look at the difference Kante makes to Chelsea.

Keita isn't a holding player. If we get him, we'd still alternate that role between Hendo and Can.

True, but that applies to every centreback.

 

VVD has pace, power, height, strength, great in the air, good passer, he I also vocal and he's a leader too.

 

Just buy the fucker already.
