A very good squad, in my opinion.

On paper the names stand out as being decent, but it's like half are past their best, and the other half are youngsters not at their peak yet.

"Were they really golden at all?". Err .. with 9 players routinely playing Champions League semis & finals as the spine of their respective teams year in year out, yes. As individuals, the 00s had some sublime English players.

Alongside many overseas players who also played in the CL with them. England were above average, little more, which was probably equal to the quarter final stages they usually reached.

After Hoddle England just had shit, overrated or past it managers who basically picked the best 11 players according to the London press and fashioned them into a 442.  They picked players out of form consistently and let older players linger on.  The funniest one was Capello.  The wankfest when he got the job was hilarious.  He came in and basically did the same shit all the other managers did.

Gerrard was a wrecking machine in midfield but ended up getting wasted because the manager had to pick the blue eyed boy fat goalhanger who couldn’t play in a 2 man midfield.

The 1996 England team were  better than the 1998 and 2002 vintages.

Yup but the main point overall is there was always better sides around.   Now as many as there is nowadays compared to their pathetic squad of over rated cunts but enough to make sure they won fuck all, thankfully

I saw Phil Thompson do 100 “ keepy uppies “ in Tesco in Broadway in the late 70’s early 80’s. Why does this matter you ask? Because Tesco burnt down not long afterwards so Thommo and Tesco we’re both on fire for a time. And that proves England are better when they play 433.

Post hoc ergo propter hoc
