One thing I’m sure everyone else has noticed is the amount of times we catch teams offside when they get free kicks and it  is ridiculous.  We obviously must work on it as a team but I’d say it’s pretty much down to this guy that it gets carried out so well.  Hyypia is my all time favourite centre half but this fella looks even better in the air than he was and I can’t believe I’m writing that.

Klopp seems to have tactically changed the thinking for defending free kicks in your own half completely. Every other team in England and Europe seems to have dragged the defensive line up five to ten yards following his lead.

He’s at least as good (easily top 3 in the league at the moment), with enviable always pace too. I do wonder what his known ‘weaknesses’ are, those Koeman wanted him to work on.

He’s the best centre back in the world Ardja.  Don’t be afraid to say it.  No cunt comes close to him worldwide nevermind in our league.

Jurgen Klopp has revealed that the decision to make Virgil van Dijk captain in midweek was made by the players.

The £75million January recruit was handed the captaincy for the first time as the Reds brushed Red Star Belgrade aside 4-0 in the Champions League at Anfield.

Jordan Henderson and James Milner’s absences meant that Klopp needed a new skipper and instead of picking himself he has revealed he let the squad vote on the decision, with Georginio Wijnaldum voted as Van Dijk’s vice-captain.

“It wasn’t my decision. I decided Henderson and Milner will stay (as captain and vice-captain),” said Klopp, who will be without Keita and Henderson again tomorrow against Cardiff.

“But the next two the players can vote. Now we have two Dutch guys next – Van Dijk and Wijnaldum, as a German I’d never thought two Dutch guys would be given such important roles.

“That was the players’ decision.”

The Reds get back to Premier League action just three days after rolling Red Star over in Europe and Klopp refused to reveal anything about his team, having given Fabinho a rare start in midweek.

“I don’t know what you can expect,” said a guarded Klopp. “It was good – it looked good.

“It was a game where it made sense to play like this, it wasn’t just because of injuries. People were quite excited about Fabinho’s performance. It was really good but he is still young and can, and will, improve.

“I was happy for him because even though I said it was no problem, I know for a player it was different.

“You want to be involved immediately but I wanted to wait until the right moment and that was the right moment.”

He's brought a calmness to the experience of watching Liverpool that is transcendent. Years of anxiety and dread whenever the opposition counterattacked have just melted away. It's difficult to know how to feel because we'd become accustomed to playing on the edge. Perhaps that's led some like myself to be unnecessarily harsh on the forwards and midfielders. We'd have lost a fair few of those games before Virgil. Thank you big man.

My love for Virgil Van Dijk runs deep. He is as quick as any CB in the world, he reads the game exceptionally, he is aerially dominant, physically dominant, he organises the defence on and off the pitch, he controls the fullbacks and the defence with his voice, he is brilliant with the ball at his feet, he rarely makes errors, and his range of passing is great.

I fucking love Joe Gomez, but the overall impact by this guy is unparalleled. He is fucking superb. There are exactly zero other centerbacks, nay, zero other footballers I’d swap him for. He. Is. Brilliant.

If you’d have had a vote for captain, who would you have voted for?

Would love to see him on the score sheet a bit more. Not that I'm complaining as he's fucking immense.

I reckon he'll get one in the next couple of games. I've noticed he's been getting forward a lot more recently, even getting in the box during open play instead of just during set pieces.

Having Fabinho comfortably slotting into the space left by Virgil is going to mean we see a lot more of this going forward.

He's Virgil van Dijk.........

I know it's supposed to be to the tune of dirty old town, but my brain keeps thinking it's something else.

Can anybody help me out? Is there a possibly more modern song that sounds close to dirty old town? Maybe it even sampled the original or something.

Proper freaking my nut out.

What’s the lyrics. Hard to make out.

I think it’s:

”He’s our centre half, he’s our number 4, watch him defend and we watch him score. He can pass the ball, calm as you like, he’s Virgil Van Dijk, he’s Virgil Van Dijk.”

At first I thought it was "and once he scored" thought it was a wee dig at Everton.

The real lyrics are better I'll admit.
