Virgil Van Dijk

100%.

Mind you, there was a moment late in the first half when Calvert-Lewin was played into the channel and Big Virg went with him stride for stride and won the ball, showing a glimpse of what he's got.

More broadly, when Klopp was being battered (by some) for not splashing the cash on other defenders (once it became apparent that Southampton weren't going to deal in the summer), I think last night rather vindicates the man; he identified the very best possible centre back out there and, eventually, got his man.

Although he cannot solve all of our defensive problems singlehandedly, Big Virg was always the right centre half for this team. NV is 100% correct.

Yeah, I was just thinking to myself... fuck me, I’m glad we waited. People had a good slag fest over the ‘incompetence’ of not buying a defender in the summer. I’m just happy we didn’t settle for a half measure. If this guy can be our Ferdinand, Terry, Carra, for the next 10 years, the last few months don’t matter.

I was more than guilty of this.

Slagged him off rotten in the summer for failing to land Keita and Van Dijk, and then failing to identify decent plan B's.

In Klopp we trust.

I liked the fact van Dijk was giving out instructions to teammates even though he was the new boy and not even captain. On the night he was very good considering he had not played for nearly 4 weeks. He got rolled once and was out sprinted a time or two but given his fitness I would say he did well. Thought Matip in comparison was not good and thought maybe Lovren will be his better partner. Who took over skipper when Milner went off?

It was great to see him so vocal, I think that will really help with the defensive organisation and solidity in time as everyone gets used to playing with each other.

I’m perfectly fine with him calling for Karius to speed up his clearances and don’t think anybody was ‘at fault’ for those situations since the ball was always cleared with plenty of time to spare. That’s good defending. You want your players to be communicating on the pitch. No idea why some are making a big deal out of it.

Everyone has said him being vocal was a good thing.

Is it your life mission to get your panties in a twist about literally everything?

Agreed, mate. Some just have an axe to grind. Could you imagine Grobbelaar playing these days?

Fuck giving him the captain's armband next season. Give it to him for the next GAME!

He could've had four goals last night. His actual goal, his header, the one that almost fell to him a few yards out and his rocket from distance that looked to be going on target.

Aside from that, he played very well. Good distribution. Effortless pace. Very dominant in the air and lots of cleverness. I loved his little Didi Hamann tumble when there was minimal contact. Plus, a few times it went into the channel and he could've easily be drawn out, but he held his position as he was aware of what was around him and that he'd leave the middle exposed.

The best thing about his performance was the calmness and his decision making. No rushed, hashed clearances, no pinball in our own box, a natural knowing of when to stand off his man or when to get in front of him to knick the ball. The opposite of Lovren against Kane at Wembley.

Early days, but I was impressed.
