Jocky was as close as you could get to a British Beckenbauer. Lawro was quick but I think Sami scored more goals? I dont really like saying this player is better in such a position because we've had so many over the years. They all played their part in helping their teams wins so, that's good enough for me.

Thats probably about right since 96.

I vaguely recall a back three of Babb, Ruddock and Wright in the early days, and thinking “This Wright bloke is a gun...”. Would be good to watch back games from that season, to see if he was actually half decent.

Wright, in his prime, was a very good centre-half. His best days were probably before he joined us. He suffered from injuries and loss of form but enjoyed something of a renaissance in the mid-nineties and was really good again for a couple of seasons.

My top 5 since I started supporting the club (1996/97)

1. Van Dijk

2. Carragher

3. Hyppia

4. Agger

5. Gomez (Bit of a wild card but fuck it...)

Carragher, hahaha.

He’d struggle to get in the top 10.

I’ve seen a lot of disparaging remarks about Carra, I was young during his prime. But I thought he was absolutely fucking boss, don’t get me wrong Rafa and Ged’s conservative set ups helped, but Carra was one of the finest defenders in the world 04-10.

Carra was superb. Not VVD level, but an excellent defender at his best.
