Virgil Van Dijk

Only having caught the very tail end of Lawro and Hansen as a 7 year old he is the best defender I have  seen at the club. Only one coming close is big Sami.

Best back 5 I have seen in my time

Reina still just pips Alisson for me on longevity.

Think it was just one of them 'I'm going to get the ball and if not I'll wipe him out'. Thought the yellow was harsh though. Got the ball, it wasn't out of control and there's no way the ref saw him catch him. Or the lino, they've given it on the reaction

It was Van Dijk, chief. He knew exactly what he was doing. A smooth bastard like him can pull off a potential leg-breaker without changing his technique. Like I said, it was risky.

The ref was looking right at it. He was lucky not to walk imo.

Anyone else think Virgil was a little naughty with that challenge on Mertens? It was something Ramos might have done to the opponent's main man early doors. Lucky not to walk.

In before you need a bit of that etc.

He clearly got the ball first though. If it was the same foot that got the ball it wouldn't even be a foul. So I guess yellow was about right but definitely not a red.

Nah, not at all.  It was the perfect sliding challenge, he took the ball completely cleanly, and then didn't raise his foot afterwards.  It was just a very unlucky coincidence that Mertens put his foot down in the position that he got caught.

Unless you are going to outlaw defenders ever turning their foot from the vertical, I really don't know what else you can expect a defender to do there.

Best. In. The. World.

He makes defending a joy to watch. On the face of it, he seems a complete defender. Like if you have a wish list of what you want from your centre half, he’d tick a lot of boxes.  No player is perfect of course, but I do wonder though when Koeman said that Virgil had a few areas of improvement still, what they are.

Lack of concentration and being a bit too casual were problems previously for him. He needed a better environment to flourish in and he's found it.

The ref is looking right at it and has the side view of Mertens ankle - of course it was a yellow.

The good news is the big man didn't change his game at all - if he was going to miss a game the first one is better

Yeah, I think our players are allowed to play the way they want and don't have to worry about making a mistake. Playing without fear is important.

Ha! I never knew this (probably most of you did, but it's still funny enough to be worth the reminder).

The lack of thinking and incisiveness in Manchester United’s transfer dealings was illustrated by Virgil Van Dijk yesterday. When he was having his @LFC medical 12 months ago, United called to find out the exact figures for the deal. By then, it was too late
