Virgil Van Dijk

He’s missed a lot of football in the last year and he’s barely trained with the squad, so there was a little bit of rust. With that said, he was magnificent, both in defence and at the other end in getting the winner. But the best thing of all was the way he came in and bossed it. He told others where they needed to be and I got the impression that Robertson and Karius were orchestrated a bit.

This sort of thing is just what we need! A commanding presence but also a vocal presence, who is not afraid to tell the others what’s what. He will knit that back line together and we are going to become a fantastic unit.

Welcome big Virgil. Great start. Onwards and upwards.

Best debut I’ve seen in a long while. He’s the rub, though, he’s a yard slower than he will be in a couple of months. He’s in a team with virtually no midfield which will change at the end of the season. We are looking at new goalkeepers. So this was a very impressive sign of things to come.

Different clubs have gone about it differently, but successful Liverpool teams have always had an outstanding spine.

As of next season, we're a goalkeeper away from a spine of GK-van Dijk-Keita-Firmino. Add another strong midfield 6 onto that and that should be all the platform the Manes and Salahs and maybe Lemars need to shine.

Van Dijk just made such a difference to our backline last night, and it was only his debut. Can't wait to see his influence grow for the rest of the season.

Whatever you say....

It helps to look at the game without rose tinted glasses regarding Van Dijk's performance and not listen to the dickheads on the BBC who know nothing about goalkeeping. Van Dijk did very well on his debut and Karius didnt do to much wrong either but those balls Van Dijk was telling Karius to deal with were his responsibility as he was caught flat footed and probably due to lack of match fitness.

Disagree regarding who should have dealt with them.

I'm not having that, those balls should have been bread and butter for karius.

I will say van dijk was nowhere for their goal though.

But all in all he looked assured and rather majestic. His pace looks effortless. Unlike Lovren there's no bullying him off the ball because he's a fucking unit. And his heading clearances are something we've lacked for quite some time.

100%.

Mind you, there was a moment late in the first half when Calvert-Lewin was played into the channel and Big Virg went with him stride for stride and won the ball, showing a glimpse of what he's got.

More broadly, when Klopp was being battered (by some) for not splashing the cash on other defenders (once it became apparent that Southampton weren't going to deal in the summer), I think last night rather vindicates the man; he identified the very best possible centre back out there and, eventually, got his man.

Although he cannot solve all of our defensive problems singlehandedly, Big Virg was always the right centre half for this team. NV is 100% correct.

I definitely agree iro the first instance, that was definitey Big Virg's resposibility, but nevertheless wasn't it great to see someone finally showing some leadership, communication and organisation out on the pitch.

Completely agree with this post. I though both played well last night.
