Glasses

I had my eyes tested two weeks ago and I've always had pretty good eyesight. They did tests and have discovered that I have become long-sighted. So I am now wearing reading glasses for things like surfing the web and (surprise, surprise) reading and the difference is absolutely astonishing. Letters and words are clear as day whereas before wearing glasses everything was a little bit blurry. Really surprising how much difference they make and I certainly wouldn't have known any difference. I really wanted to buy the frames that Klopp wears but a) I have no idea who makes them and b) I suspect they cost as much as a tank of fuel for a yacht.

Any glass wearers on here and if so, what for and what make of frames do you consider to be the best?

Sorry, hang on.

PROBABLY THE BEST UNINTENTIONAL SMILEY TLW HAS EVER WITNESSED. CONGRATULATIONS.

I use selectspecs for my glasses, and Costco for my eye tests and contacts. I wouldn't trust some high street opticians who just want to sell you glasses no matter what your vision is like. I had a free test last year at Vision express, they suggested multifocal contacts and I saw Costco offered them too. Costco did a full eye test and it was nowhere near what vision express got, far too strong. The result is that I have damned near perfect eyesight in multifocal contacts now from Costco for a lot less than vision express wanted.

I prefer Jaeger Pure titanium 282 frames, they are thin, very light, strong and suit me. You can get ex display designer frames from eBay (UK sellers) and send them to an online lens maker (like selectspecs) for reglazing. The ex display just come with the blank plastic frames with the name of the brand on. I save about £120 on just the frames doing this.

I'll take a look at their website which hopefully I can see properly. I've heard of Costco but never seen one anywhere.

Hundreds of thousands of people use hughstreet opticians every day, find a reputable one. Unfortunately once you start wearing glasses it's a downward slope, they've got you for life, unless you get lasered (which I think Stringy did last year)

I have friends that refuse to accept they need glasses, squinting at their phones.

Is it possible that glasses themselves can cause eyesight to deteriorate? They have improved my vision but I wonder if they can have a detrimental effect in the long term?

Been wearing glasses myself for about a year, pretty much out of nowhere. Definitely think my vision without them is worse than it was before I wore them and have been wondering the same, ie am I imagining it, have the glasses made it worse or have they just got worse anyway. Doesn't matter though as I have no issues with wearing them.

I lasted 52 years without them, now need them for driving and watching TV. The difference (especially watching TV) is amazing. I went for the free frames which my health insurance covers, they still look cool as fuck, modern and are comfortable and robust to boot. The actual lenses are more important and being as I had to pay for them I went for mid range. This young bird was trying to frob me off with these fuck off expensive ones. When I asked her what the difference was to the ones I wanted she said, "They are more precisely fitted to the frames and would stay stable longer." I answered "Well being as I get a 5 year guarantee with the ones I want you'd have to sort out any problems anyway, plus the lenses are in all purpose the fucking same." She wasn't happy, especially when I told her to fuck off and get someone to serve me who had a clue what they were doing.

I wear them all the time.

Never been tempted by contacts. Quite like wearing glasses.

Loads of places have 2 for 1 or some sort of offers. Quite useful at this time of year if the offer includes prescription sunglasses.

I got a pair of Police glasses and a cheaper pair free. Actually from the NHS range. I wear the cheaper ones more.

Been wearing glasses for 15-20 years. I've had all sorts but in recent years I'm more of a Ray-Ban man, simple black frames, bam-done.

Years ago this sort of thing would have been laughed at, ala Jack Duckworth, but 13 year old daughter keeps me up to date as best she can, given what she has to work with!

If you're buying frames in person, go to wherever you're buying them and try on as many pairs as you can. It's happened to me often that I would look online for the coolest ones I could find but then when I'd physically try them on, they looked weird on my face. So I'd say get the ones that fit your face shape the best instead of the ones you think look the coolest.

If you want a company recommendation, as G Richards said, Ray-Bans are probably the trendiest. They look good on pretty much anybody.

Started wearing glasses about 10 years ago got the eyes that can read without but need for long distance. Guy who tested me said it was just an age thing but I think we both knew it was caused by porn and too much masturbating.

Porn used in eye tests! I'd go for that but not keen on the mutual masturbation thing though. Had some fit female optometrists when I've been tested though so they are welcome to stay.

Wearing glasses makes your eyes dependent on them. Eyeglasses correct blurry vision. You may want to wear your glasses more often so that you can see clearly, but your glasses aren't changing your eyes so that they become dependent on your eyeglasses. You're just getting used to seeing things more clearly.

Like I said, once they have you, you're fucked and you are just a cash cow to whoever you decide is your optical provider. Which is why they are desperate to get you as a customer.

I wear contacts a couple of times a week if I'm going somewhere, and at the match. It's just easier and it gives my nose a break from glasses. The multi vision fix my near and distance by some form of magic and it's amazing, I can only tolerate them for 6 or so hours (they're disposable)

I've considered getting my eyes zapped but my script hasn't settled yet, once it does I'll probably get the distance fixed and throw reading glasses in my pocket.

Some good tips in here regarding eye tests, I'll look around for my next test and good stuff on frames too. It's surprising how much difference they have made, reliance on them is inevitable I think.
