No. Is there anyone not utter shit coming through in county cricket?

Nope. This is the problem.

It looks like the last place will be either Curran or Archer and either way I wouldn’t argue too much, I just think Curran is one of our better batsmen so would pick him on that basis.

Root is apparently going to bat at 3, which probably means that Denly is dropped. Does that just mean everyone moves up a place and they’ll pick an extra bowler in Archer? Or could they go with Curran because of his batting?

My prediction:

Roy

Burns

Root

Bairstow

Stokes

Buttler

Curran

Woakes

Moeen

Broad

Anderson

I don’t like that line up.

Looks a batsman light but also too one dimensional in the bowling.

I’d ideally like the pace option of Wood or Archer but both have questions over their fitness and Anderson touch and go as well can you really take that much of a risk?

Root is batting 3. Denly moving to 4 apparently.

Makes no sense at all to me. If you’re moving Root to 3 it should only be if you’re dropping another batsman.

Looks like it will now be:

Roy

Burns

Root

Denly

Stokes

Bairstow

Buttler

Moeen

Woakes/Archer/Curran

Broad

Anderson

Who would you drop for Archer? And do you think Denly is a better batter than Curran?

I’d be surprised if Denly turned out to be any good tbh, but hope i’m wrong obviously.

I think Curran has been comfortably one of our better batsmen in the last couple of years. I know that it doesn’t help with the balance of the team etc but no point in shoe-horning average players in just to achieve balance.

No way Stokes bats ahead of Bairstow, that’s just plain wrong.

I’m still not sure mate - the lack of top quality batsmen hampers us massively.

Im not a fan of Burns or Denly and I want a genuinely quick pace option.

I’d be very reluctant to go with both Anderson and Archer in the first test with them both only just coming back from injury.

Would probably end up being an audition between the bowlers to keep their spot in the first test.

He did last summer against India (for a test) but to be fair it was a typo (I had it other way round last night).

As I posted it I then thought it must have been a typo, the whole point of bringing Butler I to the side was to move Bairstow up the order and make him a specialist batsman.

Was chatting with my ol fella and brother about this on the weekend.

Both sides have serious flaws in the batting departments and I can easily see a couple of tests being won by an innings plus.

I guess I just don’t have enough faith in our batting line up irrespective of personnel so want to have the very strongest bowling attack.

Give the bowlers every chance to keep taking 20 wickets, as that’s the way I envisage us winning the series.

It’s obviously a big risk but just picking more and more batsman that aren’t test match level is guaranteed failure.

I’d go;

Burns

Roy

Root

Denley

Buttler (has to bat 5 if he’s in just as a batsman)

Stokes

Bairstow (wk)

Woakes

Broad

Leech

Anderson

Ali shouldn’t play as he’s out of nick and I wouldn’t risk both Anderson and Archer.

No no chance will we not change the line up multiple times through the series.

Roy and Burns opening the batting???

England will be lucky to get into double figures without a wicket down...Although not sure what the answer is regarding England's openers but it would kind of be nice not to lose all 10 wickets in a session

I hope Roy makes it at this level but Burns is just a walking wicket looks far too nervous and I can't stand that batting technique of his

I'd have Malan in instead of Denly.

Plus what happened to Keaton Jennings? He wasn't great as an opener but he has a better technique than Burns and Denly.

Genuinely don't see the point in swapping Denley and Root, which seems like the plan. I almost accept that due to England's pitiful top order options there's some sense in picking three guys just to face the new ball as cannon fodder, and then rely on a slightly protected middle order (and Root in particular) to compile the vast majority of runs. But sacrificing Root to help Denley makes no sense - either Root bats at 4 as the best batsman, or he bats at 3 to make some space down the order for someone else. I mean fuck, move him to open and get Roy down the order if you must play him but the idea of fucking up your best batsman's stability to protect a jobber like Denley from the new ball is utterly insane.

For the first test, and with Archer not fully fit, it looks like it'll be:

Roy

Burns

Root

Denley

Buttler

Stokes

Bairstow

Ali

Woakes

Broad

Anderson

For the second test it's anyone's guess. England should be looking to get Stokes as a Kallis-esque "batsman-who-holds-up-an-end-on-occasion" type all-rounder in the long run I reckon, as his technique against fast bowling is really good. That'd allow us to drop Denley, move everyone up one and have space in the order for Archer, Woakes, Broad and Anderson - Stokes and Ali are additional options. Curran starts to play more as Anderson moves to retire, and then one of Archer or Woakes takes the new ball.
