England picked a young spinner that I had genuinely never heard of by the name of Bess. Taken one wicket this season & thirty-odd last season. Was a bit baffled until I read he had made 99 at the weekend & a century late last season, so I'm assuming we are still picking bowlers based on needing lower-order runs.

Yes, the "Botham model" usually only works when they're all-rounders, rather than just ok bowlers who can bat handily.

We never learn, Skaro. This is with the new selector set-up as well which doesn't bode well.

I suppose it is a little bit more imaginative than what was expected , just getting Moeen back in.

Neither do we.

Justin Langer takes over as manager.

Came from the same "great", ethical and sporting Australian XI as Lehmann, only opened rather than batted middle order.

Same-same.

Played against him a few years ago. He can't have been more than about 15/16 at the time.

Please tell me he got you first ball with a similar delivery to the Warne / Gatting one.

Ha, no. Don't think I faced him.

To be honest, unless they're like a Muralitharan/Warne type spinner turning it square, and both ways, the difference between a county level spin bowler and a top club level spinner isn't all that great (in my humble opinion).

Not like facing Kyle Abbott on a pitch seemingly made of concrete. That I still have nightmares about.

Is he any good, not at 15/16, but generally now?  Never heard of him.

EDIT:  Actually just looked him up.  63 first class wickets at 22.49 with 7 five fors and one 10 for.

25-odd with the bat, highest 107.

Sounds OK.

Decent bit in the Guardian about him & he sounds interesting. Says you have to weigh his bowling figures against the fact that Taunton is considered a 'turner' but says he will bat above Broad and is described as sure to raise England's outfield cricket as he is electric in the field.

Says he has come through Sidmouth CC & Exeter CC where I assume Jair came across him.

He actually couldn't get a game regularly for Sidmouth, hence the move to Exeter at about 16. He has a brother who also plays at a high level (minor counties, I think).

Taunton might turn a bit, but more than anything it's known for being an absolute road.

Not seen much of him the last year or so but he seems very highly rated. My old man raved about him when he saw him play for Somerset last year.
