Excellent run chase by England to win the first ODI, a record chase at the MCG. Excellent innings by Roy and a very good innings by Root, some partnership an all. Bit of a wobble at the end losing 3 wickets but the damage had been long done, finally some joy on tour. Big win that.

I know there are differences between one-dayers & test matches , but I still can't get away from the feeling that the likes of Roy and Hales would have offered a lot more runs than Stoneman and Vince etc. They aren't too dissimilar to Warner in outlook & he is Oz's best batter this side of Smith.

Roy or Hales wouldn't make decent test openers imo mate, Stoneman wasn't great, but he did OK,they'd both be able to do a job at no 3 instead of Vince though.

I have heard this argued a fair bit , but we hardly ever get an opening stand with any of these 'specialist ' test openers so maybe we might be better getting some runs while they are there. I quite liked Stoneman's bravery & of course he wasn't as profligate as Vince but I was never confident he was ever going to make a ton , never mind a ' daddy hundred '.

On a different matter , PB & others on here with a good grip of the rules , I have a query re run outs.

I have noticed recently that batters are being given out when they are often struggling as a result of getting around the bowler in his follow-through. Not the worst example I have seen , but the 2nd Indian wicket to go down today ( Peshara ? ) clips the the ball to mid-on and starts off but the bowler has followed straight down the pitch ( & is standing with his arms held out wide for some reason ). Peshara has to divert at least a yard and a half to his right to get around him & is run out a bit short. What are the rules on the bowlers follow through in these situations ?

From what I can remember the bowler can't deviate from his line of follow through to make the batsman have to change course whilst running. If the bowler stands his ground then the batsman has to go around him. Sticking his arms out is a bit shit like, not sure if that is allowed.

Pretty much that. The bowler is under no obligation to get out of the way but can’t deliberately obstruct by excessive follow through or changing direction.

So Stokes charged with affray. My mate who is a officer of the law reckons if he pleads guilty he should at least be spared jail time.

Given the evidence, it'd be the smart thing to do? It'd also add to the narrative about learning his lesson, turning over a new leaf etc. He's about to hit his prime as a cricketer, so he doesn't really need to be compromising his place in the England set-up with so much happening for England in the next 18 months or so. He should give Ponting a call too, given he went through a similar thing early in his career and he said it helped make him the awesome batsman he eventually became.

On another note, I'm genuinely looking forward to the England v India series later this year. India are having a pretty good crack at it against the South Africans at the moment, with Kohli again showing his class. The one major blip on his otherwise incredible CV is his only tour of England to date, when he scored a mere 134 runs from 10 innings with no half centuries. He will arrive in England at the peak of his powers, surrounded by a very good team. It should make for great viewing.

Can’t see Stokes pleading guilty, his legal team will be telling him to front it out, don’t admit to affray and give the impression of drunken Twatishness.

They’ll be telling him to go with the story/truth (for all we know) he waded in on two cunts who were homophobically attacking other customers in the club/shithole that it is.

He fronts it up and he walks.

He takes a slap on the wrist and he forces the ECB to punish him to save face for them.

Go to trial, be cleared and learn you daft twat!
