What's everyone's favourite episodes? I feel I might have forgotten a couple belters but my top 3:

Zanzibar

A quiet night in

La Couchette

Edit, fuck forgot possibly the best Bernie CLifton's dressing room.

12 Days of Christmas

The Riddle of the Sphinx

Once Removed

Special mention to The Devil of Christmas for its sheer nastiness.

While 12 days of Christmas was a great episode it doesn’t come near my top three as I much prefer the episodes with a bigger streak of comedy or horror in them.

I think mine come in a run one after the other:

The Devil of Christmas

The Bill

The riddle of the Sphinx

Bernie Clifton and Sphinx are absolute shoe-ins IMO, two of the best examples of any programmes in recent years.

Big fan of The Understudy, personally. In terms of best episodes, The Harrowing, Devil of Christmas and 12 days of Christine are all outstanding. Seance Time is decent as well.

I get those choices. One of the best things about it (and the two of them in general) is it’s ambition. Even though I don’t consider your top 2 among my favourites, the originality and freshness of them doing an entire episode in iambic pentameter and a silent episode is what makes it great. Similarly the karaoke one which I didn’t feel really worked as well as they’d like, but still admired them keep trying to be so creative. You never know exactly what you’ll get in an episode quality-wise, but the whole formed when they’re all put together is just seriously impressive.

Think I need to watch them all again, they are so good and the twists usually get me even when I know there is going to be one. I reckon I'd probably pick a different 3 watching them all again.

Just realised I've had the psychoville DVD for about 10 years and still not watched it, mental (pun intended)

Yeah Tom and Gerri is ace. Migg is a great character. As is every single character Pemberton ever plays.

Including Gatiss, which of the 3 is the most talented? Very tough question.

Always change my mind on that one mate.

Pemberton is my favourite, I think he just inhabits characters in a way the others don’t quite - there’s still a bit of them in every character where his just always seem to have a few touches which are unique - but impossible to say who’s got the most talent.

Good shouts.

I also think Diddle Diddle Dumpling is brilliant, but I haven't re-watched it because it's too unsettling (which, given the standards of some of these, is some going).

Psychoville is excellent, especially the first season. I can see why they got tired of trying to construct an overarching plot with tons of characters though.

I struggle but they compliment each other incredibly well.

Gatiss - Plays pitiful characters to a tee, loved the bingo caller sketch in the Christmas special, beautifully tragic.

Shearsmith - Adept at playing authoritarian roles, smarmy cunts, regular Joe's and he's the most versatile of the 3.

Pemberton - Specialist in playing oddballs and larger than life characters.

Honestly can't choose. Perfect trio that has everything required to make any sketch a success.

Yeah, that's a really disturbing one, especially when you find out why he's so obsessed with the single shoe. It reminds me a bit of the Blue Jam stuff Chris Morris did, that sort of detached, surreal atmosphere where everything's a bit 'off'.

One of those which is even more impressive on a second watch, due to all the symmetry in the house and the significance of how music is used.

To have and to hold is a really underrated episode as well, without giving away spoilers.

There’s very few things I would listen to a director’s narration on, but I’d love to be able to with these. You just know that virtually nothing is included without having some purpose or other and I have little doubt I miss numerous references, in-jokes or little nods to something or other every episode.

That’s three belters right there.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just watched episode five and got the last episode lined up for later on.

I really didn’t enjoy episode five with Maxine Peake. Thought it was a silly premise and just seemed dead cheesy.

The footy one and the Christmas one were both good efforts but nothing special.

The one about the fella who used to live in the flat with his mum and the magician episode are the standout ones of this season for me, though they don’t quite scale the heights of previous seasons.
