The destruction of the rows of houses is bleak, and the lives lost within are given due respect. But there's also a dark comic feel, and one of typical Scouse defiance, about the presence of the piano, in perfect condition, in the street.

As an aside, I'm intrigued as to what the machine on the far side of the street is. Any ideas?

Looks like a generator of some sort. I went to an exhibition some years ago in Bootle Town Hall, about the bomb damage, that picture was probably in it, unbelievable destruction as you can imagine. There's one under the railway bridge at Marsh Lane where it was hit and it always crosses my mind when passing.

That's in the Marsh Lane area of Bootle.

No wonder they did so much damage when you see how closely packed everything was.

Yes, just read something on it, I think it's all to see in the Western Approaches in town and somewhere else which I've forgot, went in there about 20 years ago, wasn't sure it was still open so must have a look next time I'm up.

It's at the Chapel St end of Rumford Street. Think it's still open.
