When was the last time we or Utd, City, Chelsea, Arsenal for that matter have done it? Is it an ego thing with rich English clubs that "we'll see what they are like with the next step up and pay the higher price if they succeed because we can afford to"

Just guessing but I would imagine it's to do with player demands. If the fee is relatively low the player plus agent will probably make outrageous demands to ensure the player goes to the club that gives the best contract.

 

English clubs seem to have a tighter wage structure (or so it seems). Just a guess.

It's a good choice for Tielemans. There are plenty of bigger clubs to go to in 2-3 years if he keeps progressing. Arguably if he goes to one of them now, he might see a fair amount of time on the bench as well. 

 

It's all about managing your career, innit?
