Has anyone on here been?. I'm going there in April to watch a certain sport and also go to Lake Como for the day. Flying into Bergamo then getting the train.

Has anyone got any tips regarding the city?. Mainly where are the best places to eat and drink. Been told that decent bars are difficult to find.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Spent a few days there watching the derby around ten years ago or so.

Found that about bars and restaurants, hellish expensive and not loads of choice. Will never forget being charged £20 for two beers in a nothing bar and saying "No mate, I only wanted two" before realisation set in.

I can't remember names and places or owt mate, sorry, but what I can thoroughly recommend is buying a klaxon, getting as close as possible to a person who just will not leave you alone trying to sell you shit bracelets by the Duomo, no matter how you respond, and letting it go in their ear.

Especially if you find someone trying to kill you with their bare hands as entertaining as I do.

I went a good 10 years or so ago.

Don't stay near the train station. It's a shithole round there.

We asked in the train station where to go out as we arrived on Saturday afternoon and was directed somewhere (took 2 different tube lines to get there) that had a handful of decent bars.

Can't remember where it was, but it was out of the city centre.

Bergamo is nice - had a day trip there when on honeymoon in lake como.

There's a vernacular railway to the top of monte bre and the view is incredible up there.

Lake como is stunning. I stayed in Lenno and would recommend hiring a bike from there and having a cycle southwards along the coast. About a mile or so South is the villa where Star Wars (one of the prequels with Natalie Portman) and the final scenes of casino royale were set, and its stunning. You can get a boat trip out to it from Lenno also if you want.

I also agree with others that it's not that nice a place overall, lots of graffiti.

Also nothing at all of worth is open on Sunday nights, apart from a jazz club we went to a good way out of the city (somewhere in the direction of monza).

The one other thing worth seeing over and above duomo is sforza castle. It's a very cool looking castle and it's an easy walk from wherever you are in the city.

It's a fucking shithole. I lived there for two years and always thought of it as being like a hot Preston, but with more graffiti and shitter pubs. The Duomo is lovely, but under no circumstances catch anyone's eye or speak to anyone. Do not get a taxi. There's some amazing pizza to be had though, if you go through the Galleria Vittorio Emannuelle II to the left of the Duomo as you face it, take the first right to exit, then walk past the McDonalds, there's a take away pizzeria called Spontini which is cheap and beautiful (like my women, except for the beautiful and existing part). Worth going up to the part of town know as Navigli in the evening, it's where the canal is and has tonnes of decent bars. You're far better off getting cocktails than beer, only a couple of quid more and they pour without caring about the size of measures, /9 if you get lucky, you can get off your tits for a tenner. Once you've bought a drink, you can dig in to their aperitivo as well, just fill your boots with as much cold pasta, ham, cheese and whatever the fuck else they decide to lay on for you. If you're near Corso Buenos Aires, the main drag in town, there's a stunning pizzeria on the street behind it called Piccolo Ischia which I still dream about to this day, again dirt cheap, fast, -and the best pizza I've ever had. Other than that, there's a few exceptional art galleries to visit if you're up for some culture. And that's all. As a place, you can do it in a day. Hookers on street corners everywhere all day, every day, rude locals, horrific poverty as far as the eye can see and women with little dogs in £8000 bags. Fucked up mess. But great for getting to the Lakes (Como, Maggiore and Garda all within a short train ride) and Switzerland's about a twenty quid return train ride away as well. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Just a hot, shit Preston.

Thank for the info chaps. Much appreciated. Think I wasn't expecting an amazing place and everyone here has confirmed it. Planning on staying in Bergamo and heading to that funicular before getting the train to Milan. Definitely going to Lake Como and spending the day there.

My mate has been once before but wasn't impressed and now I understand why. The main part of the trip is to see the Derby.

Grumble, thanks for your detailed reply. I think I'll be back for some more info off you. Cheers.

I've never been but my missus said it's a shithole & she spent her whole weekend there being racially abused by the locals for having blonde hair (apparently people constantly trying to touch her hair as she walked past them in the street & shouting stuff across the road).

I can only assume that they haven't got televisions there yet.

I got places mixed up. The funicular railway (and monte bre) are in Lugano, not Bergamo. In Switzerland, not Italy!

It's a short bus ride from lake como which is why I got confused.

It's well worth the trip if you're in como for a while, bit probably not if you're only there for a day or so.

Milan is good if you like shopping and going to restaurants. The touristy stuff can largely be done within a day, so an excursion to somewhere like Lake Como is good use of your time. Don't know what Lake Como is like in April but in August it's one of the nicest places on Earth. Rome is the opposite of Milan in my experience - ideal for all the touristy stuff but a bit shit for shopping and restaurants. It really depends what you like to do though.

Oh, and in Como town itself, there is a funicular that takes you up the hill and gives you great views of the town and the lake.

Spent an hour there in the summer waiting for a connection from Switzerland to Venice. One of the most stressful hours of our trip, I think the backpacks were a big red beacon to all the lucky lucky men and the homeless in the area. I know I shouldn't base my opinion on an entire city based on 60 minutes waiting in a train station, but I have and I doubt I'll ever go to Milan again. Hope this helps.

Haha! I've waited at that station before when doing the trip in the opposite direction. I've clearly got a better death scowl though, as the fuckers stayed clear of me.
