In this country, the police force is an independent agency tasked with investigating and preventing crime, and maintaining public order and public safety.

If a government uses the police force to achieve its political goals, that fundamentally threatens democracy and the rule of law.

In 1984, the government is alleged to have used the police force to enforce its political agenda regarding the role of traditional industries. Using the police in this way is profoundly troubling, because if it happened once, it could happen again. An inquiry as to whether it did happen, and if so what should be done to ensure it can't happen, is a logical and obvious step to take.

To refuse to consider it is appalling.

I do not think that there is any doubt that the Government, via the Police, wanted to face down mass picketing.

All governments use the Police force to at the very least underpin their political goals, always have, always will. But crucially, the government need some sort of consensus to do so, when they don’t they struggle – which is why the Poll Tax rioters won.

The fitting up of evidence and trumped up charges were exposed some time ago. That battle was won.
