Mel C has come under fire for plugging her album in an exclusive interview with The S*n - and posing next to a bus emblazoned with the reviled paper’s logo.

The former Spice Girl, who took part in the Justice Collective’s charity single in aid of the Hillsborough Justice Campaign, has caused outrage after photos of her with The S*n’s showbiz reporter Dan Wooton surfaced online.

Mel - full name Melanie Chisholm - is currently promoting her latest album - and took the opportunity to publicise it during a live Facebook interview on the paper’s social media channels.

The 42-year-old also guest edited the paper’s showbiz column.

As well as using the paper to promote her music, she also took the opportunity to pose for a series of photos with a red bus bearing the logo of the paper.

The ECHO contacted Mel C’s representatives, and asked if she’d apologise for the interview - but were told she would only be issuing a short statement and would not apologise.

She said: “I have always supported justice for the 96 and will continue to do so.”

The pictures have surfaced during the height of a campaign to have the paper banned from Merseyside due to its coverage of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster - where it wrongly blamed Liverpool fans under the now infamous headline ‘The Truth.’

Scousers have reacted furiously - sparking calls for her to apolgise.

Richard O’Neill tweeted: “@MelanieCmusic Stop talking to The S*n. Remember your roots.”

Kieron Merret added: “Disappointing from @MelanieCMusic, who’s gone from being on #JFT96 run to being in The S*n.. and I’ve always been a fan.”

Angela Reade posted: “Mel C how could you support The S*n after what they did? Disgraceful.”

Mel, who was born in Whiston but grew up in Widnes, has previously been vocal in her support for the Hillsborough Justice Campaign - and made public appearances at a number of events, including the inaugral Run for the 96 in April 2015.

Speaking to the ECHO at the time, Mel spoke of the importance of keePing the memory of the 96 who lost their lives during the disaster alive”.

She said: “It’s so wonderful to be here today for the very first Run for the 96 5k.

“I’ve been aware of it for a while, and I just think it’s a brilliant opportunity for the city - and people from all over the world - to take part for the first one.

“I hope it gets bigger and better. It’s raising so much money for the local community, but also to keep the memory alive which is so, so important.”

Earlier this year, the longest inquests in the UK’s legal history ruled that the fans were infact unlawfully killed and were not to blame for the disaster.

In September, Liverpool councillors unanimously backed a campaign to eliminate the paper from the city.

Councillors backed a motion to call on retailers to stop selling the paper after a campaign from the Total Eclipse of The S*n group.
