I was coming up similar age Joe. Remember coming home from school and tv was on but not showing kids programmes as was usual in those days. Other than a school being decimated by a coal tip and loads of kids my age and younger being killed, it really didnt sink in.

 

Years later and as an adult, you wonder how they could ever have allowed these mountains of spoil to be built close to areas of habitation and schools.

 

RIP to all those affected and lost loved ones.
