He's obviously brilliant, we all know his ability and performance level. It's just a question of him remaining fit and history tells us that unfortunately his body will succumb to injury at some point in the season so we definitely need to keep Gomez and Konate on their toes. Could be a frustrating season for Nat though.

Great, trademark direct pass to set up Jota for a shot on goal today. Tremendous footballer. I genuinely couldn’t even say if he’s fast or not because his positioning is so good he doesn’t ever have to sprint.

That moment against Villa when Ali fell over and Young had an almost clear route to goal. Joel was the only person in the entire stadium who didn't have an involuntary sphincter clench; he just dealt with the situation with an almost insulting insouciance, as though it's the most normal thing in the world.

I genuinely think he's on par with any defender we've had play for us since Jocky.

He's not dissimilar in style to Hansen.

Hard to compare with different styles, but since then, Hyypia and Virgil have been right up there. There were a couple of seasons when Carragher was one of the best pure defenders in Europe. I liked Agger too but he was badly hobbled by injury.

When fit he is as good as any CB on the planet. He's been amazing this season. I really rate Konate but this fella has stepped up. Our defensive situation is amazing. Has it ever been as good?

Hansen, Lawrenson, Gillespie >>>>> VVD, Matip, Konate.

Hyypia was brilliant for us, and transformed a shit defence into a good one more or less the day he arrived.

But I think he would have struggled in a team playing a high line. He was quite a similar type of player to Matip I would say, and it’s hard to tell which one is the best. Matip in the current setup definately, and Hyypia definately with the Houllier tactics.

Carragher never came close to any of them, and Agger could’ve been great but never really peaked I feel.

Van Dijk is the best defender I have ever seen, miles better than both Hyypia and Matip. Probably was the best player in the world for a season or so, and isn’t too far off now either.
