Joel Matip

Recommended Posts

Klopp highlighting the unlucky nature of his injuries and the fact he had a good record at schalke. Sounds like we were trying to patch him up and get him through the season.

Hopefully now we can allow him to rest and recover properly before he plays again. Superb player, absolutely class

Matip is the defender version of Sturridge, so brilliant yet so fragile. It's a shame really he cannot go a single month healthy. I would keep him if he were on low wages but he is not. As much as you like to keep him, you cannot afford to keep leaking a hundred grand a week. So sad but he's got to go. The same argument goes for Keita by the way.

Maybe we could use him as payment for this Kabak if he does the business and Joel goes back to Schalke? I fear both him and Keita will be on big wages though so will not be easy to shift.

Apart from the “brilliant” bit.

If there was one thing I wish about matip is that I recieved the same sick pay.  Hes a brilliant defender but his injury record isn't going to change. Id sell him in the summer. Like Aurelio its gutting a proper player made of wet rich tea biscuits.

Yep. A great player, seems like a good lad too. His injury record is as bad as anyones and isn't even compatible with being a back up. Such a shame.

Unless they have a huge turnaround in fortunes, they're headed for Bundesliga 2. They can't afford to buy Joel or pay his wages anyway.

surely in that scenario we are giving matip a free transfer. as for the wages, you are probably right, it wouldn't surprise me if he earnt more than any centre back in germany that doesn't play for munich. Maybe Matt Hummels, but I can't see there being too many else.

It's such a shame as when fit he is top class but that's too few and far between for a club with our aspirations. Ratio of wages to availability must be shocking.

He's like a flash car that costs a bomb to keep on the road and still doesn't pass its MOT.

He needs fucking off. You can’t be paying 100k a fucking week for this. Get rid

Harsh, guys still played over 100 games for this club and the majority of the time has looked incredible.

Not his fault he's made of glass but agree his time here is coming to an end but would be happy for him to sty beyond the season and make use of him when he can.

I always find it funny when people say things like get rid.  Who the fuck are you going to get rid of him to exactly?  Who is going to pay him the wages we do directly coming off this injury and his record since being here?

Out for the rest of the season.

Just confirmed on the offal.

Jürgen Klopp has confirmed Joel Matip is set to miss the remainder of the 2020-21 season due to an ankle ligament injury.

The defender sustained the issue in a challenge to thwart Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min during the first half of Liverpool’s 3-1 win in London last Thursday.

Further diagnosis of the problem has revealed Matip will be unable to play any further part in the Reds’ campaign.

The champions are already without fellow centre-backs Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk due to long-term injuries; however, Klopp’s defensive options have been bolstered by the deadline-day arrivals of Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak.

Detailing Matip’s setback, the manager told Liverpoolfc.com: “Unfortunately, we found out now after everybody looked at it that Joel will be out for the rest of the season.

“But he will be ready for the start of the next pre-season and finally everything will be sorted.”

Praising the No.32’s efforts to play through injuries and sacrifice his own fitness on behalf of the team, Klopp added: “In the end, we have to admit that he probably did that.

“The situation is just, the season started and Joel was injured when the season started, unfortunately. We should not forget that at Schalke when he was there he played pretty much all the time completely through, he never had something.

“Then he was unlucky with a Koulibaly challenge against Napoli in the last second, in the Everton game kind of things, a little bit with the foot here and there. If something started and then the situation is like our situation – that nobody can really wait because of our situation with Virgil out and Joe out – we always had to try to find the first moment when he is able to play again.

“It was really unlucky because it was a brilliant challenge he made actually, he saved our life in that moment in the Tottenham game when he won the challenge against Son.

“But he injured his ankle and played the game on and now is out for the season, so you can imagine how much he tried to stay on the pitch and tried to help us.

“We will wait for him. He has now the rest of this season, then the summer, then the pre-season to get ready again and he will be ready again.”

That's probably the league title, unfortunately. 17 more games without a top class CB is asking a little much at this point and will tell over a long period of time.

You're dead right. And in the past we might have come to a deal to get rid and save his wages, but our policy now seems just to sit on these players till their contract runs out. So it would seem likely Matip will be limping around Kirkby for years to come.

Kirkby is close enough to a farm or two so we can drop him off at one and he can spend the rest of his days in comfort.

We can feed him to the pigs at Acorn farm to save 100 grand a week. It's only round the corner from the training ground.

Any injury update on Matip at all?

What kind of ankle injury keeps you out for 6 months? Especially when you finished the first half, then got subbed at half time?

He was ruled out for the season wasn't he?

Yep, thought so too.

He should just be considered a bonus player now. No need asking about his fitness or looking forward to his recovery. If he happens to be fit for a game next season, great!! Otherwise, we should just pretend he doesnt exist.

I don't believe for a minute that injury alone is why he was ruled out for season.

More a case of this was on top of all his other problems and club made call to try and sort this and all his other problems at same time with an extended period of recovery/rehab - in the hope the rest and work can 'fix' him.

I doubt it will work, he'll be 'fit' at start of next season and fucked again in no time.
