Christian Pulisic - Dortmund look to ward off Liverpool interest by offering new contract

USA winger to be offered new contract as Bundesliga outfit look to retain his services

BYJAMES PEARCE

14:29, 10 NOV 2016UPDATED14:30, 10 NOV 2016

Borussia Dortmund are hoping to convince Christian Pulisic to pen a new long-term contract to ward off interest from Liverpool .

Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of the USA international winger, who was the subject of an £11million bid from the Reds last summer.

Liverpool are in the market for an attacker in January with Danny Ings out for the season with a knee injury and Sadio Mane expected to miss a month due to his commitments with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations.

However, Dortmund are desperate to ensure that Pulisic stays put. The 18-year-old, who is under contract until 2019, has established himself in Thomas Tuchel’s first-team squad and has clocked up a dozen appearances in all competitions so far this season.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc says they have no intention of selling him and are ready to offer him improved terms.

“There have been some offers for him in the summer window from England and from German clubs, but we would like to have him here and develop him here,” Zorc told Sports Illustrated.

“We did not educate him to sell him. We have a long-running contract until 2019, but because of his development the club is ready to speak to him to prolong his contract at any time.”

Pennsylvania-born Pulisic joined Dortmund’s Academy in January 2015 when Klopp was still manager there.

* Obviously it's an awful pun, readily admitted.

Now then, who are we buying in January? Pulisic? He's having more of a breakthrough season and will be tough to land. He's also under contract for three more years. You never say never, but the circumstances around that potential deal mean we are likely to significantly overpay, at least at this point in his development, even if they would sell.

Still, we have money, and if Klopp identifies him as the player we need, we would do it. I think Pulisic is also a clever footballer and in addition to covering the wing he could interchange with other positions in our forward line, with the other intelligent players we have.

Mind you, if Klopp feels the player is worth, say, £25M and Dortmund won't deal unless we offer, say, £40M, then our manager has form for walking away and moving to the next target.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp sets his sights on Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah

22:30, 12 NOV 2016

BY TOM HOPKINSON

Despite topping the Premier League Jurgen Klopp is looking to sure up his defence and the impressive 20-year-old could be the solution

Jurgen Klopp wants to sign a central defender in January – and imposing Bayer Leverkusen centre-half Jonathan Tah is on his radar.

Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip have shored up Liverpool’s defence but there is still room for improvement.

Tah, 20, has impressed since joining Leverkusen from Hamburg in a £7million deal in 2015 and already has two caps for Germany.

Germany legend Rudi Voller, Leverkusen’s sporting director, said: “Jonathan belongs to a new generation of centre-backs who are very good footballers.”

But England goal hero Daniel Sturridge is set to face further competition for his Kop place after it emerged Klopp also wants to sign a No.9.

Sturridge, who scored the opener against Scotland on Friday, has yet to score a Premier League goal this season.

nd Klopp has preferred Roberto Firmino in recent weeks, with Sturridge restricted largely to appearances from the substitutes’ bench.

If Klopp gets his way when the transfer window opens then the player who gave the Three Lions’ the lead against Scotland on Friday could face an even greater battle for game time at Anfield.

Isn't Tah quite slow?

Or am I mixing him up with the other young CB in Germany?

He's not the paciest CB about but has massive potential. Very good in the tackle and in aerial battles, also reads the game well for a youngster.

I don't watch German football, but I watch Youtube.

Initial impressions - He looks very raw to me. Lots of talent, but rash, bit of a showboater, like Stones.

But young enough to improve though.
