Sugar Ape

Michael Kiwanuka

Recommended Posts

Never heard any of his songs before but based on some reviews I've read and praise on here from Mook and Monty I picked Love and Hate up before. Last copy in HMV. Going to sit down in a minute with some tins and give it a listen.

Grew up listing to soul and Motown mainly. I remember a time in the late 80's/early 90's when the only CDs we owned were the greatest hits of Marvin Gaye, The Chi-Lites and The Drifters. Seen him compared to Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Bill Withers and a lot more so he's got a lot to live up to.

Oh, and if it's shit Mook you owe me £21.99 or the equivalent amount in Beef Transform-A-Snacks.

I hope you like it, mate. I reckon he's brilliant. Stupidly I neglected to get tickets for his Edinburgh gig in October and it's now sold out.

A bit obscure but Black man in a white World reminds me of Tony Allen's 70s stuff, in terms of the rhythms...

I enjoyed that. Last song is a belter.

Think the biggest surprise though is that after 13 years plus on the site Monty was right about something for the first time.

Pretty sure I said you were a cunt pretty early on in your forum life.

So that's at least two hits.

This is bad but I only bought the album this week after bleating on about him for months, fuck me, some of it is really, really good.

He's playing in Edinburgh tonight & I'm a bit gutted I didn't buy tickets now, it's the last time he'll be playing in venues that size at the rate he's going.

It really is fantastic. Gets some airtime in my gaff almost every day. Can't pick a favourite track but right now it's between Cold Little Heart, which is utterly transcendent; and Rule the World.

Think I might buy this one myself, and I also noticed that is produced by this guy....

I was always wondering what happened to him..

Where is Sugar Ape these days?

Saw him last night in Dublin. Just pure quality. His voice is flawless live. I'm dying like a bastard now but what a gig.

That answers that one?

Slapped most of these in my 'to listen to' playlist, will probably give them a go at work.  Leon Bridges was an immediate thumbs up though. Class.
